It looks like my KDS Avitron (AV21TF) 21" monitor might be going bad, it was doing some weird stuff today.

The screen suddenly zoomed to about 500%, went back to normal and zoomed again in a matter of 1-2 seconds, then the screen went black. I had to cycle the power switch on the front panel and then it came back on? It did this twice in a 1.5 hour period.

I checked the vga cable and it was tight on both ends. I also rebooted after it did it the first time.

I decided to call KDS support and they said the monitor was still under warranty:

All parts & labor (Including CRT), I just have to pay for freight there.

He then said they are out of the 21" monitor business and had no idea how long it would take to fix, or to get a replacement. I asked him if he was talking 6 months, and he said he did not now, BUT they where offering 19" LCD screens as a replacement, Link to 19" specs.

I know nothing about LCD flatpanels, does this monitor look OK, I would lose .8" diagonally?

I run my PC at 1280 x 1024 32bit color (Gainward GeForce2 Ti500 Golden Sample).

I use my PC mostly for graphic/web design, but I also like to play the occasional game, do games play OK on an LCD? Hopefully that's not a stupid question, I swear I read something once about LCD's not being good for games?

Thanks,

Mitch

That is a good deal. If you dont like the LCD then you can sell it for a fast $600+ on Ebay and buy almost any CRT monitor you like.

The KDS LCDs have an extremely nice picture. I used to have the Rad 5 (15") and it was beautiful. I have since gotten rid of it and replaced it with a 18.1" Dell LCD. The KDS handled games fine and I would love to get that kind of offer from KDS. Actually my 17" KDS CRT is on its way out so who knows.

That is a great DEAL!!!

I have a KDS as well, and had to send it back to the manufacture, same problem it will eventually get worse and worse, and some days it will seem clear as day.
I had the 19" version, and sent mine back on about 6 month before the warranty expired. Freight will cost a bundle, my 19" ~$80.

A 19" LCD would rock, first off LCD cost wont be coming down, and on top of that, you could either sell it and go back to Best Buy(or whereever else KDS is sold) and look for a 21" for around ~$300

Also, if you have a problem with the LCD it will cost a fraction to send it back in. go for it.

I love my 21 inch P1110 (sony tube)
i think i would accept a new (not refurb) 19" LCD thats a good deal. but if you'd rather have 21"
then you can sell it for a fast $600+ on Ebay and buy almost any CRT monitor you like
congrats, you just got a great deal!
personally i would get the LCD sell it and get a P1110 from HP or one of it's distributers Ted Dasher is really good. Ask for chris and you can probly get it REAL cheap.

LCDs most certainly will be coming down in price, big time. 21" CRTs on the other hand will not because the demand just isn't there.
If it were me I would sell the LCD and either buy a smaller , cheaper LCD or another 21" monitor and possibly pocket a few bucks.

Id be willing to bet that one year from now LCDs will be at 1/2 or less the price they are now.
15" ~$150
17" ~$200
18" ~$250
19" ~$300
20" ~$400

LCDs are easier to manufacter, they use less parts , and overall they are cheaper to make than CRTs.
LCD makers are cashing in right now due to the LCD boom, later on comes the price wars. :)

I partially agree.

Although the LCDs will come down in price, eventually.

CRTs are becoming obsolete. Stores do not want to take up the Shelf space of these monsters. You are more likely to see liquidations of these models on stores before you see the price of LCDs come down.

Thanks everyone for the comments, I just wanted to make sure I was getting a good deal.

I guess if I don't like the LCD, I can use my wifes Dell P1110 21" monitor.

I really have to say I love this place and all the great support I get from all of you!

But aren't LCD monitors bad for gaming? I've always heard they streak and aren't a viable solution for gaming at all.

What are gamers supposed to do in a couple years once LCD's take over and CRT's raise in price because of the minority role?

I'm not a Gamer but would trade in 1 Heartbeat...some LCD's have minimal or no Ghosting, cost more and it's new (or refurbed?)...so resale would be easier and you could get a Sony 21" ;), it runs native @ your current settings, and new full warranty :D

There is a large selection of LCD's out right now that have little to no streaking. It's a good bet that in a few years, when LCD's start to take over, the streaking will be down to even less than it is currently. So, it's not a big deal for gamers after all.:)

Actually, I gave the 19" LCD to my wife and took her 21" Dell/Sony for myself. I wanted the 21" because it has dual vga inputs, so I can avoid using a video switching box.

Wow KDS has some impressive service if they sent you a 19" LCD in leu of a 21" CRT. Nice score!

Well, it wasn't that easy, they first sent me two 21" monitors that had really bad convergance problems along the bottom, then they finally offered me the 19" LCD.

so which are the LCDs without the streaking or ghosting, or rather, minimal streaking/ghosting.

i would also liek very much to go LCD cause of the space and other factors, but the streaking/ghosting as you describe it kinda kills t for me. are there any particular brands / monitors that are taking care to minimize those ? BTW i am only interested in 19-21" size range. absolutely nothing below 19".

Your CRT was much better than the LCD in every way except space and power consumption. It's no contest really.

However, the LCD sells for a lot more (more than double) because it's an LCD, so you can sell it on e-bay and get a better CRT.
