My best friend has been doing the managers job for the past 6 months since the old manager got the sack, but hes only been getting paid minor overtime.

Hes still classed as the Operations Assistant though.

So anyways, he had a few extra programs installed, like updates for windows, and the occaisional toy like WinZip, ICQ, and WinDVD for when he was staying after work doing overtime and wanted a movie running in the backround..

Anyway, the tech guy was snooping through is computer config, found these extra programs, and thought something of it.

In this position, would you have contacted the person directly and said can you get rid of them?

Or would you have contacted EVERY director / manager in the company grassing him up?

Im curious to know what you would do...

If I wanted to move up in the world I would have gone with option number 2. If staying in a dead end job were for me, I would have gone with option number 1.

Depends very largely on the company itself.

I personally usually talk to the user. I uninstall it, then let them know it's an issue.

After re-reading your post; your really looking at it the wrong way.

"the tech guy was snooping around in his config"

It's NOT his config. It's the COMPANY'S computer. The tech guy also wasn't "snooping".

I don't know that I would care about windvd or winzip.. but icq could be a problem. That's not at all work related.. you don't have icq "in the background running". You didn't mention mp3's but I delete them. After making *cough* backups. lol.

Well, I just got the IT manager at my company fired by going straight to HR with what he found on my machine. So, if I wanted to keep my job, I'd go with option 1.

The guy acted like a jerk. I would have ignored it. Manage by results not by microscope.

Thank you.

What I found funny was he complained to not 1, not 2, but all 3 of the companys directors, saying that "My friend" needs his computer to be taken away from him immediately.

He then started an internal email forward to all the managers of the different districts and countrys that the company operated in.

People that dont even know my friend joined in saying how "wrong" it was

The only thing I'd have issue with is ICQ . but even at that you always go to the person first . . .
Usually most organizations have polcies regarding this type of stuff. . .
BTW who says tattle tales move up in the world? Making enemies can hurt you too.

So, basically you are saying that you can't move up in the world without taking advantage of someone else, or fvcking them over?
Excellent way to approach things.

As a security admin, I'd remind him about unauthorized software and give him a time frame to remove it himself before I do it for him.

No need to report him to higher-ups. If he's a repeat offender I'd tell his supervisor. If he continues to offend, I'll tell MY supervisor.

But for a first time and fairly harmless stuff? I'd just read him the riot act and get rid of the contraband.

The only one that I see as an issue is ICQ.

The others would only be worth messing with if there was a specific company policy against using them.

I'm an IT admin and I ignore most of to petty stuff (unless I find Gator or similar, then I immediately speak with the person, educate them and remove it).
We have a company policy that IT must install any software on your computer. No downloaded screensavers allowed or funny cursors, etc... As far as the HR manual is concerned they are grounds for termination (though I doubt anyone would get fired for it).
You have to remember that security and virus protection are top priority for IT admins and managers. The directors of companies don't give a sh!t if you can't have winamp or aquarium screensavers on your computer, they just want numbers on documents that look good.

Exactly, here we allow the staff to put anything on just as long as it doesn't screw up the PC or mess with the network, it's all at their own risk really.

To a certain degree it's the same way at my company.

No one likes a narc, and that will definetly stop you from moving up. People will just give you lipservice and say "Good work home boy", but they will be thinking, "Damn, gotta keep this guy out as much as possible"

In his situaltion, ICQ is the only thing I'd have to deal with, but we block all IM at the firewall level anyway.
