Hi guys. First post here. I just borrowed a radeon 8500 from my friend. I had a geforce2 ultra. Card decided to die on me. Now when i hook up the radeon. All i get is a black screen. You can tell the screen works when you plug in the monitor. It sounds like it refreshes but i get no video at all. All black screens. I have a old dimension. Could it be the agp speed is to fast for the motherboard? Can you think of any jumpers I might need to set? Any help would be great guys. Thanks!!!

Wecome to Anandtech. You need to put out more specs on your system, and do you see it as it boots, and then it goes black ? More details please.

The first thing I would do is check the CMOS/BIOS settings to make sure that your video default is AGP. The 8500 will run on AGP 1X. The 8500 only has one blue connector for an analog monitor. I would then check the video cable to the monitor and if possible, swap it for another. The symptom suggests that the 8500 may not be full seated in the AGP slot. ???

OK, will ANY card post? You said your last card died, what if it is something else ? PSU ?

Yes the other card works. Sorta. I get grey streaks going across the screen. It isnt the monitor. I swapped them out to check.

OK, all that shows is that something is bad. If you can't get SOME video card to work at post, then you have more serious problems. Try a PCI video card, like a 1 meg. Also, see if you can swap out the PSU. If the PSU was weak, it could explain both video cards output (just an educated guess) The Radeon probably needs more juice than the geforce2 ultra.

could try making sure the card is pushed all the way in the slot, trivial as it is.

I am thinking bad AGP slot....

However the ONLY card I have ever killed was a Radeon 8500...I don't know how or why but the thing would only display garbled screens when I added a new dimm and had to remove it.
