Issues With Slow Windows 7 Shutdown

Hello, I have had a strange issues lately that is driving me nuts. Windows will take forever to shut down at what seems like random times, though subjectively it seems to take longer if I have been running the PC for a while.

I have had shut down issues with vista before, but they were always rather obvious program hangs (anti virus or whatever) where the OS would delay as it shuts things down before entering the shutdown screen. However, this issues seems to move into the shutdown screen fine (there is a delay depending on what is running, and sometimes a long one that was, at least I think, due to creative drivers). Once the OS enters the blue-green "Windows is shutting down" screen my issues start up.

Frankly, I'm not exactly sure what windows is doing while that screen is displayed, so I'm not sure where to check for issues.

Sometimes it shuts down within a few seconds (less than 10) of getting to the screen, other times after a couple minutes, and other times long enough that I just turn it off. One rather strange thing I have noticed is that the USB devices and displays will be shut down (keyboard and such) but the PC will remain active (fans and lights) for an additional handful of time (not very consistent).

Certain issues I know of on my rig include the MB insisting to report the PS/2 port when it is not plugged in (there is no BIOS option to turn it off for whatever reason, I have not used a ps/2 device in ages) which leads to an error in the device manager regarding the obviously non functioning ps/2 keyboard.

This issue is annoying, but seems to not be the end of the world. Obviously though, I'd like to figure out what is wrong.

My rig:
MB: Asus P5E3 Premium
Ram: 8gb DDR3 (2*4) at roughly 1450mhz
CPU: Q9550 @ 3.6ghz (8.5 * 425mhz)
Storage: 2 * OCZ Vertex SSD 120gb in RAID 0, 2 * 512gb 7200rpm in RAID 0
Video: 2 * 4890 in crossfire
Sound: Creative X-Fi Titanium PCI express
OS: Windows Seven Professional

I have had this issue with Vista and XP and after troubleshooting everything under the sun I realized that it was the RAM module. Good Luck!

Certainly possible, though I have never had an error on any memory tests, prime95, or linpack. Mind you, couldn't hurt to recheck my over clock stability, have not run a thorough suite in a few months (4dimms is certainly a pain to OC compared to 2..). This issue never happened until I upgraded to windows seven, and actually has not happened since I got back from holiday :\.

I'm currently thinking the issue was my phone charging through USB confusing the computer as it is unable to turn the phone off like other USB devices. We shall see. The phone is just a tad older than this install of seven. I can't recall if there was the same problem in the last few days of running vista.

Hi,

Defragmentation process can solve the slow shut down problems in Windows 7 operating system. This process helps the computer to rearrange the files on the disk, making them always stay at the same place and easier to be accessed. This defragmentation process helps your computer system to speeding up shut down speed.
