Issues with RAID 0 + non-RAID disk with ICH9r

Hi,

I have a really annoying problem with my Asus P5K3 Deluxe. I just set up 2x500 GB disks to act as a RAID 0 volume. I've configured them with Intel Storage Matrix, and everything works just fine. I've installed Windows 7 on the system and everything went smooth.

But when I try to attach another 1x750 GB disk as an extra disk, not another RAID disk, the computer won't get pass the BIOS POST screen when it usually lists the SATA drives. It just hangs after listing USB devices.

If I remove the 750 GB SATA cable, the system will boot up again. If i move the cable to any other of the 4 free SATA ports, nothing happens. It just won't boot.

Am I right that it should be possible to install 2x500 GB as RAID 0 and on top of that a 1x750 GB as just a regular disk?

And does anyone know what could cause this problem? I've tried with different cables and on differents SATA ports. No luck.

Anyone?

Thou the main suspect is the MB, I wouldn't discard an aging PSU.

I'm not sure. It could identify all the disks when not using RAID. I'm leaning towards that I just can't mix RAID and non-RAID on the 6 SATA ports...

Hey swedan-

1. make sure the power cable is spread around, and not on the same power chain. Hope this makes sense..
2. Make sure in the BIOs the 750gig drive is set to non raid.

Those are my two suggestions..

Thanks. Tried it. No luck with the power cable. And I can't access BIOS, it says "entering setup" when I press del, but it just stops there. I think I will try with an SATA to ESATA cable and attach the internal extra disk to the ESATA port on the back of my computer whilst taking the power from the PSU. Thanks anyhow.

Update your bios?

If you can't get into the bios setup... something is weird or messed up with the controller/mb...

Once you do get into the bios set the raid card to boot first and make sure the 750 hd is set to last.

it seems like your motherboard was trying to boot from sata first instead of the raid.

This issue occurs before the system tries to boot and before ICH9R or JMicron RAID BIOS shows up as well. And the problem was the same with the other disk.

I'm starting to think that I can't mix RAID and non-RAID on the same controller. But I can't read anything about it regarding Asus P5K3...
