my friend has an old gateway laptop he wanted me to mess around with before he left for boston, he's there for 5 weeks this summer at a music college for bass guitar lessons. he needed to be able to type and run AIM and what not, he had a laptop he wanted me to clean out. it was his brothers before, an 800mhz celeron running winME. i cleared out most of the files to free up space on the 9gb hdd, installed adaware/spybot/avg and aim and all that good stuff. i ran all the spyware programs and cleaned it of all the nasty stuff that was on it. it was running fine and i thought all was well.

a few days ago he asked if he could come get it from my house in an hour or two, so i said sure. i remembered i forgot to put word on it so i hooked it up again and installed word. it got to the screen where it asks you to restart, so i just shut down the computer and waited for him to come.

the same night he took it he called me saying it wouldn't start. he dropped it off and this thing is pissing me off. it either goes to a weird screen when it boots, asking me what to boot from...either harddrive, cd-rom, floppy, or network. if you chose any of them, the same screen just comes up again. but that only happens sometimes. sometimes the bios loads fine, goes through the windows loading screen, and right before windows should load, i get a blue screen. the text is real blurry and messed up so i can't read it. i'm thinking something's up with the harddrive. anything i can do to get this to work?
