Issues with DDR memory and motherboard

I am trying to build a new socket A system for my T-Bird 1.13 ghz processor, yet I keep getting errors whenever I try to power up the system. Both sets of post codes indicate a memory error of some kind, and I have tried with NEC DDR 2100 2.5v and Mushkin PC2100 memory. I have also tried with two different mother boards, a Shuttle AK31 and an EPOX 8kha+, and both of them are having the same problems. I have tried all of the standard fixes, and was wondering if anyone sees something here that I don't?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this has been very frustrating to me.

Thanks,
Shawn

When I boot the motherboard outside the case, I can get it past the memory recognition to the self post test, would this indicate a short being caused by the case or something along those lines?

Did you use the same power supply when booting outside the case?
Sounds like your troubleshooting properly.
Can you plug a floppy in and boot off a boot disk outside the case?
Get a DOS prompt?

Which revision of the AK31? They list 3 different ones.
Have you reset the bios yet, maybe there's a bad setting in it.
Some boards require a fan to be plugged into the cpu_fan header.
(I don't think it would get this far if that was it.)

Do you still get error #'s on the Epox board outside the case?
(Diagnostic LED's)

Ok, still working outside the case, I got the machine (w/ the EPOX boarD) to boot up using a boot disk fine. Does this indicate some sort of short caused by the case, or what?

It's what it sounds like, check to make sure that there aren't any extra mobo mounting studs or clips. Make sure that the holes in the mobo line up correctly with the studs that are there.

There aren't any extra studs / clips. Does there need to be any sort of insulation between the motherboard and the mounting studs, or should they just be directly connected? I am at my wits end here and any help would be appreciated.

You don't need any insulation between mobo and mounting studs.

I know that with the Epox mobo you have to apply alot of pressure to seat the memory correctly, are you sure it's fully seated?

I just came across one where the tray the mobo attaches to was warped just a little and it was causing the mobo to twist just a little and lose power so that it couldn't start. A new case solved the problem.

Hope some of this helps you...🙂
