I have a midyear 2011 imac 27" and a copy of WinXP i want to install thru bootcamp. Drive is formatted, drivers downloaded, but when the system reboots i am stuck with "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" forever and it does not move forward. I am stumped, any ideas or help is much appreciated! thx

Yea, I am pretty sure that bootcamp hasn't supported XP for a couple of years now, and I think that MS is dropping their support soonish (if they haven't already).

What do you need XP for, would using VMWare Fusion or Parallels get the job done?

Does your copy of XP include SP3? Beyond that, I'd just say that XP might not be supported by Apple for a bootcamp install on a newer machine. Might have to go with Win7.

Realized that the hard way. Now i am putting Vista then upgrade to Win 7. I will mainly use it for gaming.

with the 2010 mbas, apple dropped xp and vista support. as of today, the 2010 mbas and 2011 mbps and imacs only support windows 7. believe me, i originally wanted xp on my 2011 mbp, but would stall on the "setup is inspecting your configuration" screen. i eventually gave up and went to windows 7, which has been fine for me...

You can do a clean install of Windows 7 using an upgrade disc without having to put Vista on first.

yep. install as normal, put in the cd key (sometimes it randomly doesnt accept it, but dont worry, you can still install without putting one in), and install. when you finally load windows, install all the drivers, etc.

then go to this site and follow method #2, which is the registry hack. literally, you are changing one value, and reactivating windows in the command prompt. it'll think its a fresh install. i have done this method for several people who bought the windows 7 professional upgrade for $30 since they were a student, and it has worked 100% of the time.

Yup. That's what I did. Worked every time.
