issues with 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t wolfsburg edition

I posted on VWVORTEX, but it has been nearly a week without a single reply! So I figure I will try here, since we have this nifty new section for car stuff. It's a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T *wolfsburg edition.

It seems my odo/tach lights do no work anymore (but the brake light and CEL will all work). also, my cruise control decided to not work ... I think it may have been the same time.

I checked fuse five and numerous other fuses :

but the cluster does not light up, and cruise control does not work still.

haha, in the cluster?? crazy...that sounds a little tough to get at to look to see.

But isn't it ironic that the cruise control is out?

do you or any friends have a vag-com cable/software setup? that might be handy, especially if a friend is very knowledgeable with vag-com

yes, I do. What do you think I should try on it?

Maybe the bulbs and the CC are just a coincidence. Focus on one issue first then work to the next. Please tell me you have a Bentley?

hook it up and see if any (eletrical system?) codes are coming up, maybe? i've only used vag-com for engine codes (CEL and the like) so far, so i don't know if it would even help you at all. can't hurt though 🙂

not even sure if that code is related.

try hitting up vwvortex and the like, or possibly even googling. forums like vwvortex *should* be able to pinpoint specific items from engine code readings 🙂 i'm not very experienced with the vag-com thing, myself

vag com just reads codes via an ODBII connector, specifically I have mine connected to my laptop to read em, nice program for troubleshooting.

that code in particular is 'nothing to worry about' it happens when it starts weird.

how did you pull these codes? What gateway did you use on the VAG-COM to pull these 46/comfort and coinvence system?

confirm there is no vecihle speed sensor fault and then confirm there are no damages to the speed sensor on top of the engine. assuming you have a 5speed of course. VW is dumb with fuses in that fuse panel they NEVER come with the right card nor does their wiring diagram remotely work.

A long short here but it might sound like your cluster had an internal short to ground. Which i have seen in the past and its a dealership only because the immobilzer is built into the cluster.

List everything on the cluster that works, lights up and doesn't work please so i can get a better idea of EXACTLY what i can rule out

It is everything but the atch and odo lights.

brake light, CEL, brake sensor, all come on when I start the car, its just the take and ODO.

my 88 cabby had a bad ground in the cluster that caused this, but it also affected the fuel gauge and tach. Added a dedicated ground and no more problems. Not sure if you cluster is electronic too or not (I would think so) but I would pull the cluster and check the ground/bulbs.

Just wanted to confirm something if you wanted to get a little dirty. jack up the front end disconnect the speed sensor and get a DVM, confirm AC voltage is made by spinning the wheels on both sensors.

haha, but the speed sensor works! It is just the lights.
