Issues setting up Linksys WRT54G-RG

I suck at networking stuff, hopefully you can help.

I am replacing an old TrendNET router that's been bugging out on me (keeps freezing) with a Linksys WRT54G-RG. I went to my control panel and got rid of the default Network Magic program that came with the old router and removed the old router. I plugged the modem straight to my computer and put the Linksys CD in.

Went through the early steps (says it found an old router and asked if I wanted to replace it, I said yeah). Went through the instructions, and after plugging the router up and hitting next it says it can't connect to the internet...except I'm on the internet right now with that setup. Heck, while it's checking my internet setup I'm browsing.

My questions:
A) Is there some step I'm missing to "uninstall" the old router?
B) What can I do to fix this so I can finish the install process?
C) Since I can get onto the internet is finishing the CD even important?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...setting up networks just isn't my thing.

Routers do not need to be installed or uninstalled.

The problem is Net Magic. This application is suppose to make it easy for people.

Make easy something that is very easy to begin with, and in then process alters the default working of the OS' Network settings.

Get rid of Net Magic put the new Router ON and configure it according to it manual.

Oh, I ditched Network Magic as soon as I could (I hated that program). But whatever was on the Linksys CD wasn't working. I ended up just plugging the router in and after discovering that the IP on my PC wasn't the standard Linksys IP I finally got all my devices on and the MAC filter working.

Still don't know what was wrong with the CD though.

Looks like I still need to swap out my modem, my connection keeps dropping every once in a while and while my old router was dead I think that the modem is also having issues.

Good info, the only reason I think that isn't the cause is that there was no new hardware added, there hadn't been any in 6+ months. Is there something in my desktop that could have suddenly started causing this issue?
