This is my current setup:

I have one PC that is hooked up to 2 screens in 2 different living rooms.

Upstairs is connected via HDMI, and is a 56" lcd TV. When this is on, i want sound to come through the TV via HDMI.

Downstairs is the projector hooked up with a DVI to HDMI wire. Also the computer speakers are located downstairs. When this screen is on, i want sound to come through the speakers.

Lastly, when nether is on, I want sound to come out of the speakers. (i have
360 sound as an input, and it comes out the computer speakers.)

the setup that i described was actually working perfectly before, without doing any messing with anything, thats just how it behaved automatically. (windows 7) Now the other day i formatted the drive and installed windows 8. Right now all sound is coming out of the speakers, no matter what, there is no HDMI override, let alone automatic switch when it goes to the TV.

Any suggestions on how to make this work like it did before?

Reinstall Win7?

Sounds kind of strange to me... even with Win7, how does your PC 'know' your upstairs TV or projector is on or off? Wouldn't all receiving electronics always be on for sound? Maybe you had some sound software that did that, and it isn't compatible with Win8?

Both displays are digital, so when you turn on the wanted input (tv for example), you hear the usb plug in noise if you we using external speakers. Same goes for the projector.

Before, when the display was selected, the TV's speakers which were hooked up through HDMI took precedent over the external speakers hooked up through a stereo wire. The sound wont come out both though.

There was no extra software, and im almost postive windows 8 isnt the problem. I honestly think its the order i first plugged things in this time thats screwing it up, but i dont know how to get it back.

Last time i turned the TV off, so the computer didnt even know it was there. Was downstairs with the PJ on, and had my roommate plug in the speakers. Then when i went back upstairs, i turned the TV on, and the TV speakers took over, and disabled the ones downstairs.

This time i made the mistake of plugging in the speakers when the TV was on, so they take precedent over the HDMI all the time now. I need to find a way to have the HDMI sound disable external speakers when it is available. Theres gotta be a way!!! :(

Anyone have any ideas? Every timei switch i have to go to control panel, then sound, and change the default device.

I just need something to disable the speakers when the hdmi tv is connected.

ok so i think the problem has solved itself somehow. i think the computer finally just set the HDMI as default, but when its unavailable, it will use the stereo speakers - which is exactly what i wanted.

No idea how it happened, and i wish i could save these settings somehow when i need to go and reinstall an OS when this beta runs out later this year.
