Issue with Windows Desktop / Explorer shell?

My roomate is having issues with his laptop. He's running windows XP home.

Basically it seems that explorer (as the desktop shell) is continually crashing and restarting. I tried to get into safe mode to do a system restore, but it does the same thing in safe mode.

He doesn't have his system discs to reinstall, nor does he want to.

Is there an alternate method of fixing his computer, aside from reinstalling?

Are you guys running ffdshow and trying to access a folder full of video files? There's an update at sf.net for that problem.

I also had explorer crashes when I was running Windows XP SP1, but after updating to SP2, the problem appears to have been fixed.
