I recently ordered some car stereo stuff from onlinecarstereo.com and thru ebay. Onlinecarstereo.com item was paid via AMEX but ebay item was paid via paypal instant transfer.

following are the 2 tracking #s
1Z 91E 634 03 6068 176 5
1Z 027 600 42 4025 301 9

It was scheduled to be delivered today (2/7/06) but I wasnt home at the time. As you can see from the tracking info, a delivery attempt was made on 12:50 PM but noone was home to accept the package, but surprisingly a delivery was made at 1:04 PM and signed for by someone called "PADIEO".

Now I do not know who PADIEO is and not finding any infonotice or any packages at my door or with my neighbors, I called UPS to find out what happened to my package. They contacted the driver and got back to me with the following story (according to the UPS driver)

They left the infonotice at 12:50 pm. Then the driver claims that he was hailed down by a lady (accompanied by an older man in a car) with the infonotice. He claims that she took the infonotice off my door and hailed him down by Lee Street (a nearby street to where I live). Since she had the infonotice the driver released the package to her without question and without taking down any form of ID. Now this is clearly against UPS policies and there is no way to prove the driver's account of what happened.

The guy at the UPS shipping center wouldnt give out the drivers name and the driver had left already so I had limited information. It would be best if I could speak with the driver myself since no info was left on what this lady looked like (race, age, hair, height, clothes, etc) or what kind of car she was driving. For all I know, this entire story could have been made up and the UPS guy stole my merchandise. Either way, i think my items were stolen.

Now I have already contacted the shippers and told them about the situation. Both packages were shipped insured, but I still have a feeling that Im gonna get screwed on this. The driver is supposed to be stopping by my house tomorrow to give his account on what happened.

Now I need your advise in this as something like this has never happened to be before. What can I do in this other that what I have already done. What kind of questions can I ask the driver tomorrow (if he does stop by) to find out if he might have had a hand in this or not. I am thinking about getting a digital voice recorder so I can record what he says tomorrow.

And input would be appreciated. Thanks for looking

update:
So the UPS guy stopped by and gave me his account of the story. He seemed rather spooked. I guess me complaining like an ass to his supervisor paid off. He gave me the description of the lady who picked it up and it seemed awful like the previous owner of this condo. So here's what happened:

Previous owner is expecting a UPS/Fedex letter with some kind of important documents. I guess she came by my house minutes after UPS guy left and seeing the infonotice, she assumed it was for her. So she took the infonotice off my door and flagged the UPS guy down. I dont exactly know how or why UPS guy decided to give her the packages, but he did and I guess she was sort of confused because she cant speak english that well, so she signed for them.
Now her last name is Paccio (something I was unaware of up until 30 mins ago), but I guess the way she signed made it show up as Padio on UPS's system. Not finding anyone with the last name Padio in my town, or in NJ for that matter, I feared the worst and started panicking (expensive packages). In hindsight, maybe I overreacted a little bit, but better to be safe than sorry.

So as it turns out, UPS guy was telling the truth - he maybe lazy and a dumbass, but turns out he isnt a crook. Im pissed at the previous owner though for not contacting me even though she knew she had my packages. I guess I'll chalk up her inability to speak english well as her excuse.

I have my packages and all is back to normal. Now I need some sleep...slept like 2 hrs last night - tossing and turning most of the night.

I have called shippers, local UPS shipping center, dumass UPS guy, and UPS corporate updating them about the situation. Also have informed UPS corporate that although this event turned out well, my packages could easily have been stolen because of the driver's stupidity. I suggested that they make a policy to require ID when picking up packages - no matter from where.

Updated Cliffs:
Previous owner expecting package that will get sent to my house for some reason.
She saw infonotice
Dumass UPS guy gave her the packages
Dumass previous owner didnt call me to tell me she had packages
I slept 2 hrs last night

are you serious??? WTF?? You can't just flag someone down on the street claiming to be the person, because then anyone could do it. There has to be some protection - he must not have followed protocol, because usually you answer your door to get the packet. Don't act as if you don't expect anything, because then they probably will just screw you :(:(:(:(

EDIT: YAY!!!

sup Ninjja. How's BU?
yea that is clearly against UPS policies. The guy I spoke with (not the driver) even said so. Sadly its very likely that my packages were stolen (either by driver or the "lady" who flagged him down)

There is no reason for the UPS driver to come to your house. In fact, considering he either stole or facilitated the theft of your item, I wouldn't want him there without a policeman present. Call corporate and the police.

It is NOT your job to figure out whodunnit or whether the delivery guy f'ed up. THAT is UPS's job.

Probably a good business they have, stealing info-notices off doors then hailing down the UPS drivers and stealing packages. Then right off to ebay they go.

I'd say talk to the UPS driver, try to figure out what happened, then start talking to your ccard company and Paypal about reversing the charges. It wasn't your fault, and the shipper has to file for an insurance claim, so the two shippers in this case can deal with UPS, you don't have to. Tell them that UPS screwed up and gave away the packages to someone without checking who they were, and they need to file a claim. Reorder your stuff.

As the story stands, you have a theft to report. There is no point in talking to the driver, he is just the driver and probably a thief. You do not want him on your property or to be talking to him without witnesses.

Get in contact with UPS. They are very good and almost always make things right. Good luck.

contacted UPS corporate. apparantly its not in their policy for drivers to ask for ID if someone flags them down with infonotice moments after delivery attempt was made. Driver just assumes that I could not get to the door on time so I chased the driver down with the infonotice. This seems like a MAJOR FLAW in their policy.

Looks like Im gonna have to contact the police

Hahaha, that's funny.

I had to sue UPS over stolen computer parts 4 or so years ago, shipment mysteriously disapearing from there facility :|.

I wouldn't trust UPS with a broken keyboard, this story is just another example of what UPS employees do.

PS: For OP, any claim will take 3 months to resolve, trust me. Easy to deal with CC company, or the original shipper.

CC chargebacks take time too, call merchant and see if they will reverse charges before filing claim with UPS. I think shipper hast to file claim with UPS.

well the original shipper would still have to file a claim/tracer with UPS correct? does that take 3 months also?!?

Hmmm goodluck on getting your money/items. It might take a while as large businesses will probably be lazy unless they have some damn good customer service.

No it takes at LEAST 3 months. UPS is one of the worse. They will drag it out in hopes you just go away. I have known quite a few people that have had to sue UPS over junk like this.
I switched to Fed-Ex ground for packages and US mail for letters and very small items that fit in their pri. boxs. Never had to make a clim or any problem since. That and Fed-Ex ground is so much cheaper does not hurt either.
