The problem i am having is that it reads cds just fine, but it won't read dvds, either retail dvds, or data dvds. weird huh? anyone know what the cause mite be?
How old is it?
My sister's laptop has HL-DT-ST GCC-4240N drive, which is a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. It can play DVD's just fine, but it can't see CD's. I recall reading a post saying that it uses a different laser for DVD or CD, and that one is dead. I don't know how accurate that is, but it would explain the problem.
Check Google; maybe you can get a firmware update and try that? I don't know that it'll work, and it will kill the drive if the flash somehow goes wrong, but it might be a last resort.
I've flashed a few drives with updated firmware without any problems.
