Issue with shutting down Vista.

Ok, so I just built a new system quad core Intel CPU, Abit IN9 32 xmax motherboard, 600 Watt PSU x1600 pro video card (I built this for someone else, they picked the parts). It has not had any stability issues while using Vista but a couple of times now, when the computer has been on for a while, I go to restart it or shut it down and it sits there at the shutting down screen for about a minute, then it turns off. When I turn it back on, it says that windows was not shut down correctly. Is this an issue with Vista? Also I think that those times it's had this issue I've done some sort of update.

Just wondering if this is kind of normal for Vista or maybe there is something else wrong?

Oh yeah and now I just experienced another issue, they have a Wireless card that comes with the motherboard, I installed it, installed the drivers everything was working fine. I booted up this morning and it was just gone, not in the device manager. So I restarted, this time it didn't hang on the shutting down screen and now it's back and working again. Ugg, I hope these are vista bugs, if not makes me wondering what is going on.
 
I find that when I do a shutdown, sometimes it happens right away and sometimes it sits for many minutes. Eventually though, it does shut down and I get no errors when I turn the machine back on.

Not sure what it is doing or why the delay sometimes.
 
Hmm, makes me wonder what is going on then, I mean it sounds like it's normal to delay sometimes but why would it just shut it's self down improperly? Well I'm doing all the vista updates now so hopefully that will take care of it.
 
btcomm1, I have those issues you described as well.

When shutting down though it depends on whether or not I choose to install updates before shutting down. This will cause it take a little while. Also, when booting back up it either takes awhile, or errors saying the system was not shut down properly. I only have this when installing updates before shutting down.

When I don't install the updates it can either shut down immediately, or after a couple, or after even a few minutes. Now, this all depends on what I have running as well.

A lot of the problems people mention tend to be widely common, so I am assuming this is another to put on a list of Vista bugs. Service Pack 1 is a little ways away, but I will be in hopes that these issues are fixed.
 
Well that is good to hear, but now I'm having some more issues. I had the issue so far one time where the wireless card just disappeared, I had already done some windows updates, but now when I try it says installing 1 of 7 and it's getting stuck at KB932246. It's actually seeming like it's locking the whole system up, things are becoming unresponsive, I shut down the computer and when I turned it back on, it would show the bios, then get stuck at some message about Sata link and just sit there. I turned it on and off many times and the only thing that seemed to get it to boot up was to unplug the power supply and plug it back in. It booted into windows again, however doing the updates it's getting stuck on the same one.

Now I'm not sure if this is a software issue or a hardware issue. When I do ctrl alt del it will not give me the option to start the task manager, however I can still turn on and off numlock and caps lock.
 
Well, I waited long enough to know that it shouldn't take that long. Also I wouldn't figure it would lock the machine up while doing it normally. Also when I rebooted the machine after this update seemed to lock it up, it's stuck at the satalink message again. I have read that the bios on this motherboard is not a good release version, also for some reason Abit has not released another official version since it's release if you go to their website it's still at 1.0. However they do have beta versions which I think are better.

Does anyone know how to update an Abit bios without booting off a freakin floppy? I mean why are they so behind the times? with Asus all you do is run a file in windows, it automatically reboots and installs the update.

If it isn't provided by Abit directly(a utility to update the bios that is), then it may be not worth the risk finding 3rd party software to do so.

Ok, well there is no guarante that the issue is fixed but I called Abit and by default I think their ram voltage is at 1.85, he suggested that I put it to 2.0. I did that, booted up and was able to run the updates no problem. Then after that I was able to reboot and even after the updates it did not hang. You might want to turn up the voltage on your ram Tarrant64. Considering it locked up on me twice while doing the updates and went through without a problem when I upped the voltage perhaps this issue is resolved.

Well that problem might be solved, however the disappearing wireless card is still happening. I boot up it's there, I boot up again it's not. I forgot to ask the Abit tech support guy about this issue, I hope it's a driver issue but I don't see how it could be seeing as even when the driver wasn't installed it was showing up in the device manager.
 
Well, Abit airplace wifi, it fits in those tiny slots on the motherboard. Well I don't know what to think, I swapped it out to the other slot and booted up, installed the driver and Vista locked up on me, ctrl alt del did nothing, I had a black screen with a mouse I could move that was it. So I forced it to shut down and started it back up, this time it didn't hang on the SATAlink message though, and at this point in time it works but I'm wondering if I reboot if it will fail to show up again and then of course, if it works fine in the other slot that means most likely I have a bad slot on this new motherboard. Man, why can't things just work they way they were designed, the worst part of this is that it isn't for me and there is an impatient person that wants their computer up and running perfectly.

I would suggest another wireless card other than the one provided by Abit. Oh, and the whole black screen with the mouse? I LOVE IT.
 
I suppose if the truth is that the reason these issues are happening are because of vista and not because of Hardware then that would be fine, but if it's hardware then no amount of vista patching is going to fix it and I feel they wouldn't be too happy. The whole black screen with a mouse is that something that just happens in vista or is that possibly a harware issue? I mean, I've heard people posting about how they have had vista up and running for like 40 days strait and no problems and for me to keep getting issues with it like it locking up while installing a driver, I just have to wonder if it is a hardware issue.
 
You know, thinking back, most of my problems come from shutting down and starting windows back up again. If I leave it running, I could probably go 2-3 days, maybe even a week, without a problem.

I have some really flaky Nvidia drivers though, and usually when starting up I can come across the whole blank screen with just a mouse. Also, when it kicks into screen saver and I catch it just as it's doing so and move the mouse, it locks up for a good...2-3 minutes, but then it's fine.
