Can someone please explain to me why this thread

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=38&threadid=2097830

isn't racist, but the thread discussing black culture and ebonics was? The mod who locked up the previous thread went nuclear and said that if the OP "ever brought that racist crap in here again" he'd be permabanned.

I'm not saying the mexican thread offends me, I'm saying the other thread shouldn't have been locked up for such an arbitrary reason. I'd like to hear the previous mod's thinking on that one.

why is it okay to use the term "riced out" when referring to asians but not "beaned out" when referring to Latinos. Both are somewhat derogatory. Yet you aren't worried about riced out.

Didn't see the ebonics thread, but I can only imagine how that went, and it certainly has more of a racist factor.

If you didn't see the thread then how the hell are you going to claim it's more racist? Because it's about black people? The way people talk is inherently more racially charged than the cars they drive? I used the phrase "beaned out" to describe it but that was only one aspect of it, the general topic of the thread was "Why do mexicans all drive those crazy low-rider trucks" If you're going to make an opinion at least make it an educated one. I wouldn't have bothered making this thread unless the Ebonics thread was NOT any more racist than the driving thread.

I have never seen a discussion about Ebonics where blacks were not openly derided and made fun of for the way they talk. Ebonics in itsself is a stereotypical topic, as evidenced here.

The term "riced out" is applied almost universally, without regard to the race or nationality of the car's owner, but still could be offensive to asians. "Beaned out" in your example is obviously not widely used, and in this instance is primarily aimed at an ethnic group. It is obviously a parody of "riced out". While the term itsself may be offensive, the thread in question didn't appear to have degenerated into a mockery of the hispanic culture.

Ebonics is almost universally applied to blacks, and almost universally results in derision and mockery of blacks. That's what makes it more racially insensitive. Having not seen the particular thread, but having seen many previous threads of a similar nature, I can only imagine why it was locked.

oh, and after reviewing the Ebonics thread, and seeing your post
I still don't believe Ebonics can be compared to the switch from Old-Middle-Modern english, however. It's spoken by a small group of people who, to be completely frank, most people do not care about, and certainly very people purposely emulate.

Your own words demonstrate that:

1) you equate a persons worth with how they speak
2) you admit it is purposely and openly derided.

given that the thread was started a the first post of a new user, I am also certain the mods felt it was a troll thread.

given your comments in that thread, I suspect you have pretty negative feelings toward most african-americans and view them as less valuable beings than yourself. which is sad if true.

people grow up in all kinds of different situations and environments. just because a man cannot express himself in proper english doesn't necessarily mean anything about his worth or character. a man can have poor grammar, and curse like a sailor, and still be a good person. If you truly believe anyone who speaks ebonics is worth less as a person, and not worth of your respect, then you are exhibiting racist attitudes.

Nowhere, in that ENTIRE post, did I say that was how *I* personally felt. The part you bolded is furthermore completely true. It's not a good thing that it's true, but it is. The OP's original question was "Why do black people speak badly" and most of the discussion was centered around informing him that it's more complicated than that. Real racist stuff, having an intelligent discussion about it.

Since you've jumped to no less than 4 conclusions

#1. I equate a person's worth with how they speak.
#2. I hate black people
#3. The thread was a "mockery of black culture"
#4. I think people who speak in Ebonics are worthless

You're not exactly the most progressive person ever, and you're clearly an oversensitive whiner. Judging from the fact that Harvey has not bothered to reply to this thread, he's apparently of much the same attitude as you.

Go ahead and assume that everyone hates blacks and everyone hates Ebonics. Makes you look exceptionally wise and reasonable.

Odd that you'd say that when it's you who seems to be the "oversensitive whiner". I know that you feel you have a dragon to slay here but when that dragon only seems to bother you maybe it's best just to let it go.

Whatever. I'm fighting against a brick wall here, it's true. If no one cares that some "racist" threads are cool while some are not, then you're right, I'm wasting my time.
