issue with internet connection

Ok so i built a brand new computer and finished installing the drives and such and went to boot up the internet and i receive a "not connected " alert from my task bar but my Ethernet cable is plugged into my modem directly to the tower. It does not pick up any possible networks at all, any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this ?

Oh and the ethernet connection is directly into the motherboard which is a msi z77a-gd55

Have you installed the motherboard chipset drivers and the driver for the onboard Ethernet adapter from the CD that came with the motherboard? Also, from an escalated CMD window, try running an IPCONFIG /release command, followed by an IPCONFIG /renew command.

I did have all the chipset drives install and so forth and i tried the CMD promp like you said and it was giving me the error " Operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation" and also gives me a error in the troubleshooting area of my network connection " The intel(R) gigabite network connection adapter is experiencing driver- or hardware- related problems.

I am wondering should i just bite the bullet and get a PCI express card and go from there?

You shouldn't need to purchase an additional NIC. It sounds like you just don't have the drivers installed. If you look in Device Manager, are there any Unknown Devices listed?

For some reason the motherboard disc will not automatically load the lan adapter drivers. You have to go into the disc directory find the Lan drivers and load them from there. I remember tearing my hair out a few years back trying to get on the internet before I read the writing on the back of the motherboard disc sleeve. Felt like I missed something when I was in the 2nd grade.

The Ethernet driver is a separate driver from the chipset driver. It should be available on the CD that came from the motherboard, or you can download a copy from here (it is saved in a compressed ZIP format, so you'll need Winzip or 7Zip to open it):

If the driver still refuses to install, you may have a defective Ethernet port on the motherboard. If that turns out to be the case, I'd RMA the board.

Follow this process to make sure that the network aspects of the computer are On and configured Correctly.

Check the Device Manager for valid Wire card entry.

If there is No valid entry, delete any Bogus Entry, and re-install the Wire card's Drivers.

Check the Network connections to make sure that you have a Local Area Connection Icon/Entry, and that the Properties of the Icon (right click on the Icon) are correctly configured with TCP/IPv4 protocol in the Network Connections Properties.

Log to the Router's menu from a working computer and make sure that the DHCP is On and it is configured to assign IPs that can cover the number of computer that are connected (few more will be even better).

Switch Off the computer and the Router, Reboot the Router, and the computer.

Right click on the Wire card Network Connection, choose Status, Details, and see if it got an IP and the rest of the settings.
