Issue with Intel Rapid Start / Hiberfil

samsung 830 128gb - my only system drive, I've only used ~40gb in the last 4 years so it's more than enough space even with large overprovision or hiberfil

So I can't get intel rapid start to work. I think it has something to do with the fact that I created a 12.8gb unallocated partition (so in disk management, my drive shows as 100mb System reserved NTFS Healthy / C: 98.34gb NTFS healthy boot, page file, etc / 12.8gb Unallocated (black bar) / 8gb Healthy (Hibernation partition). The reason I created that unallocated partition was because samsung magician wouldn't let me create an overprovision on it's own, probably because it's my only drive, so i manually created it.

If I right click the hibernation partition it just lists 'help' instead of all those options. When I go into diskpart and hit 'detail volume', only the 100mb system reserved and 98gb main are listed, the unallocated and hiber isn't listed.

When I set my PC to sleep, it 'turns off' as intel rapid start appears to do, comes back on for a sec, then turns off... like intel rapid start always does. Then about 60 seconds later, it'll just restart. I think it'll even prompt me something about continue with system resume or delete old data, and if i set use system resume or whatever it says some stop code error about the hiberfil.

Thanks. I like my intel rapid start so no need to tell me how I shouldn't use it or why bother, there's a reason I bother. If I don't want to use it, I know very easily how to turn it off.
 
Generslly speaking, if you can get along with Sleep or Shutdown, disable hibernation. It is hardon a SSD.
 
I didn't ask you on whether or not I should use intel rapid start. Thanks a lot for not answering my question. The OP is already way too long, I'd rather not write an entire page on why I am using Intel Rapid Start and due to my particular circumstances and uses, it's actually the best choice for me.

There's also wear leveling, and the fact I'm not using some Gen 1 SSD at max capacity. But I appreciate the regurgitated information based on a long outdated blanket recommendation.

Intel Rapid start uses less energy than sleep and boots quicker. Shutdown and booting takes time. Maybe you are okay with minute differences, but I appreciate an instant on/off that uses less energy, and even if it's not the biggest deal in the world, why would you not use the better choice that is free.

anyways, i deleted the unallocated space, the hinernation partition shows in disk management but not diskpart. when i hit 'sleep', my pc shuts down for a sec, then it boots right back up and immediately where i left off, almost like its auto-waking from irst sleep.

^ Maybe if you bother reading the OP you wouldve known better. Like really, now you are going to be a grammar nazi about this? The title is to make it clear what my question is about, or what i believe it is about, and I believe the hiberfil is somehow related to the problem. I could be wrong, I could be right, maybe those knowledgeable about hibernation will check out the thread and post.


I hit sleep, system 'turns off' into S3, then reboots for a sec and then turns off, going into S4 - as it should (this is described in any intel rapid start documentation, if you use irst you know this is normal). Then about 60 seconds later, the system just turns itself on.

So sometimes, my system just turns back on after ~60 seconds, just like coming from sleep (as if auto woken up), and other times it does this:

I'll get some screen saying something like there was a problem with the restoration data (that grey/black screen, you know, when you shutdown your system in a way it shouldn't have been and it gives you choices, or like it says if you want to run a memory diagnostic or not, etc). I can either hit delete restoration data and resume boot, or attempt to use restoration data.

Then, I get a screen saying somethign like:

There was a problem with the restoration data
Stop error: xC000...411

Location: Hiberfil.sys

I think that might have worked. How odd, that the same Intel Rapid Start I downloaded ~2 months ago, and 2 days ago, both were the same, older version. Intel is usually very good (or paranoid, really) about keeping bad versions of drivers/utilities off their site, I'm surprised that they'd just have an unstable version up.

I'll have to test a bit more but I think that worked.

Wear leveling is an EXCELLENT reason NOT to use Hibernate. Perhaps the biggest reason in fact. But rereading I see you mean the SSD caching thing instead, which makes more sense.
