Issue with "hidden files" setting on Windows 7

I'm having an interesting problem on my computer after installing some programs from download.com. I don't know if that is the cause. In Windows Explorer, there is a setting in the Folder Options for either "Don't Show Hidden Files" or "Show Hidden Files". The radio button is blank for both. If I set it to one, when I go to back look, the setting is removed.

I cannot change the setting, and I am unable to see hidden files on my computer.

This seems like a virus. I also recently uninstalled AVG and installed Bitdefender on my computer.

I'm running Windows 7 with current updates.

Thanks for any help.

Download.com downloads usually attach what I call "adware" to your computer. Your can prevent it from doing so, but it usually involves saying "no" to a lot of things.

Start by going to programs and features and see if there are programs that were installed around the same time of your download. Once that is complete, if there are still problems, install Malwarebytes Antimalmware from filehippo.com and see if it finds anything.

I rebooted the computer, and the problem went away. Does that make any sense? I have run Malwarebytes a few times. It doesn't find anything.

Software I had installed:

Wise Disk Cleaner 8.4.1
WinDirStat 1.1.2
Defraggler
Bitdefender

I always uncheck the box and do not allow any other programs to be installed with download.com

to fully clean out most malware I suggest running, in this order:

Rkill
JunkwareRemovalTool
MBAM or Hitman pro, reboot.
ADWcleaner, reboot
Revo Uninstaller, remove anything that was installed in the time frame where you got the virus that you dont recognize
Jetclean, use the uninstall feature to remove things that revo cant see, and then run the one click fix.
reboot
reset all browsers
reboot
you should be virus free at that point unless you have something exotic.
