Issue with friends laptop

Hi my friend in the UK is having some trouble with his laptop, and I am out of ideas. He purchased about 9 months ago from Time, who I believe are now in liquidation. I imagine it was on a credit card.

Problem is it will not turn on when on button is pressed. The hard drive does not spin up or the processor fans activate. He has tried pressing keyboard buttons etc but not knowing a lot about laptops I can't rule out suspend problems. He has tried removing and replacing the battery. When the power pack (mains charger lead) is plugged in the battery light does glow, but thats the only sign of life.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 
If you havent already, try this. Tell him to remove:

1) The Hdd
2) Optical Drive

and try starting up.

If that does not work, tell him to remove the memory and re seat it. If he has 2 RAM chips, try booting on either. Post back the results.
