I built a Intel Haswell based machine using a Asus z87-A LGA motherboard and a Intel Core i5-4670k processor. I upgraded the BIOS but I think there is a newer version so I'll try install that.

The system runs windows 7 (its a dell OEM disc that i purchased off amazon). I have an ASUS DRW-24B1ST dvd drive that is detected by the bios (i used it to install the OS), and detected by the operating system.

However I cannot open discs, read discs from that drive. I have to use an external USB cd/dvd drive to do that. CDburnerXP does not show compatible drives (even though the drive is listed as compatible). I even installed Nero Burnkwik but that doesnt burn either.

I believe the issue is with AHCI. I currently have 3 hard drives, a 250gb Samsung SSD (OS), 1tb Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 and a 2tb ST2000DM001 drives attached too. I have 'secure boot' on it seems in the bios.
The drives are connected AHCI and I cant just flip the cdrom into IDE in the bios. It has to all be AHCI or IDE or Raid. I have the dvd drive in SATA 1, SATA2 is SSD, 3-4 are the seagates.

Any idea what I have to do. I am frustrated, cant use that computer because of the cd drive issue. I can reinstall by turning off secure boot and AHCI if needed, but would i lose speed.

Also the CPU runs super hot (compared to the AMD with stock cooler in the other system). I may have to run a Hyper 212 cooler, any idea how hard that may be a tasK?

okay updated to latest firmware, installed the latest chipset stuff from intel / asus and it still wont work. However it sees the disc i insert, it just cant read it.

If i try eject from windows it says there is a disc in the drive been read. However i can hit eject from the hardware button and it ejects.

If i try to double click on the drive with a disc in it, it wont read it.

well its a legal copy of windows 7 through jett systems. It works fine on other machines, its just an OEM disc with a COA code.

I'll try what you suggested, worst comes to worst i will nuke the install but before that change the ports on whats plugged in where

Double-check: which SATA ports are Intel and which are 3rd-party controller. Disable the 3rd-party controller in bios, if not needed. As stated previously: the optical SATA drive should plug in to the highest numbered Intel SATA port: #5, with boot HD on port #0.

Might be silly but I have had 2 users with a similar issue (sometimes a wierd text file is all they see). Have you removed the drive from Device Manager and rescanned for it?

So I took all your suggestions..

1. Yes I could boot from the drive, i installed the OS, and its still reading.
2. I decided to hold off on switching SATA ports, until the last resort, however what fixed the problem was removing the device and re-scanning for it in Windows 7.

So its now reading cds and dvd's correctly. W00t! Thanks TopWeasel.. :)
