Issue with 40D

So I recently purchased a new 40D and I love it! However I live in Vermont where it gets quite cold, it has an issue that's a real pain. After a while of being outside, I notice in any mode (other then manual of course), it displays the blinking 30' shutter speed. The light meter is off the chart as underexposed. Even in manual mode, the light meter is blinking off to the left.

At first I thought it might be a setting that was messed up but even after resetting it to factory defaults, nothing fixes it other then letting it warm back up!

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to contact Canon about it but it's a damn pain in the ass to have to send it back to them and have no camera!

How cold is it?

I've used my 40D in 20 degree weather before to shoot star trails and the only issue I had was the battery dying much more quickly due to the cold.

The other day it was ~32 without the wind. I'm pretty sure it's not normal. It sure is annoying when you have to switch to manual and judge your settings with no light meter.
