I'm driving a 2003 Chevy Impala. I'm a high school senior and I'll be going off to college next year, but I'd like to keep this car in shape for when I come back during summers and vacations. For awhile now I've noticed an odd whining sound that can be heard when the engine is running - usually when I'm accelerating or maintaining speed up a hill. I've heard that it could be the alternator. Can anyone give their opinion?

Sorry but it could be a lot fo things such as a idler pully, alt, steering pump, etc...

Best thing to do is take the belt off and spin everything by hand to see if anythign is loose or makes noise when you do that.

GM is notorious for having bad fuel pumps, or fuel pumps that whine. I had a 1993 bonneville and it did the same thing.
