Ok, was out running around doing some work in prep for hunting season last weekend and my ATV started acting up. Started fine, and ran perfectly first thing in the day, but after riding around on it for quite a while, it started sputtering and missing, and eventually died. It would restart and idle fine, but as soon as I shifted into gear or gave it any throttle, it would die again. When it finally started and would run in gear, it had absolutely zero power, as in it wouldn't even turn the tires a partial revolution. So we parked it for an hour or so, and when we got back to it (after it sat cooling) it started right up and ran normally. The only time it has ever exhibited this behavior has been after an extended ride, so it appears to be heat (or otherwise usage) related, but I have no clue where to begin to look for answers.

Any advice is welcome...and it is not modded at all. I am the original owner and it is bone stock.

My first thought is that it's running lean. Seems like that would be the case if you open the throttle and it stalls out or just doesn't have enough power. Could be a clogged fuel fitler or clogged fuel line. Worst case the carb is gummed up. I would try replacing the fuel filter and then running some carb cleaner/injector cleaner through the next tank of gas. Could also have been a bad tank of gas. Could try siphoning out what's in there and replacing it completely if the fuel filter doesn't fix it.

Hey Jeff,

I have 5 quads here in NH. One for each person in my family. I recently purchased 2 of them for my younger ones. Both of their quads had the same issue you speak of. It ended up being dirty carburators from sitting around without use. I had the carbs cleaned and then the valves adjusted by a local shop here and they have run sweet ever since.

Thanks AMC and Dave - gives me a place to begin. Anyone else feel free to chime in as well. :)
