Somehow I got suckered into helping a friend of a friend with her computer. When I finally saw it, it was an old dell Opti-plex 550. Yeah, I know. Anyway, I started with the ram and sure enough one of the sticks was bad but then the onboard video crapped out on me but I degree. Anyway I told her I could just slap her HD in my computer, copy it, and give her the backup. Easy as pie......or so I thought. Well I just put the drive in and I highlight everything and click on properties so I can see how much room it will take. 3.blahblah gigs. Np. So then I remember she said it was kinda full so I when I checked the drive properties. Sure enough 9.97gigs used..... -_- wtf. So then I try to get into her decuments and settings and BAM! Access denied. ???!! So any ideas? She'd really like to have this stuff so any help would be great. I believe she was running XP but I could never get the computer past the boot screen while the video was still working.

the drive is formatted as NTFS and your account doesnt have privilages to the drive. You will have to modify the privilages on the drive in order to have access to the data.

I suggest starting at the root of the drive and give yourself privilages there; than replace privilages on the subfolders a couple of times until you have privilages to everything.

Just take ownership of the drive. Just right click, sharing/security, advance, then the ownership tab, change it to your name and make sure you click that check box that says to apply it to all the child folders of the directory. Hit apply, watch it change the permissions, copy over the data, done.
