Israeli soldier suicides next to Israeli and French presidents

Story

Confusion has marred French President Nicolas Sarkozy's farewell to Israel, after a soldier shot himself dead during an airport departure ceremony.

Mr Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni, were rushed into their plane after the shot. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was also hurried to safety.

The incident at Ben-Gurion airport came at the end of Mr Sarkozy's three-day visit to Israel and the West Bank.

A police spokesman said the security officer had committed suicide.

Think it's a political protest? I can't imagine the soldiers for such functions are not screened for mental disorders...

Think it's about the cease fire with Hamas? Guess it's too early to know much.

Indeed, suicide as protest is unlikely too. Shooting either presidents would be more 'logical' then.

I don't understand why if the guy was suicidal he didn't take out one or both leaders and let his companions take him out or do it in the privacy of his own home. I think I'll go all Manchurian Candidate and say his programming failed.

Some reports say he may have shot himself accidently... That's almost worse than suicidal soldiers
