As amended in 1985, the law states that "A candidates' list shall not participate in elections to the Knesset if its objects or actions, expressly or by implication, include one of the following: 1) negation of the existence of the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people; 2) negation of the democratic character of the State; 3) incitement to racism."
this amendation to the original law follows traditional zionist logic' they're was nothing really amended, just made more obvious
for self-delusional purposes, while simultaneously upholding old contradicitons.
when you declare a state for a particular people based, as here, on ethnicity, you're in effect excluding everyone else who does
not fit these narrow ethnic prerequisites from national priviledges. so, no. 3, 'incitement to racism', calls into question no.1, 'negation
of the state of isreal as the state of the jewish people' and no.2 'negation of the democratic character of the state [of isreal].'
this is old hat which isreal has been grappling with for, i dunno, at least 25 years, maybe much much longer. this humanist criticism
may predate the founding of the state, back to the dissenting voices of the european zionist congresses in the late 19th and early
20th centuries.
