Apparently it was called off after 5 soldiers from Sayeret Matkal were killed in an accident training for the mission.

Too bad. I read an AP story in the local paper that they planned to fire a special missle into Hussein, but during training, a live missle was used when a dummy missle was supposed to be, killing the 5 soldiers.

Man, the Israelis could have saved everyone a lot of trouble and lives if they had gone through with it.

The five soldiers, members of the elite unit, were playing the part of the targets, Saddam Hussein and his bodyguards, and the other commandos were to fire a dummy missile at them. By mistake, a live missile was substituted, and the five were killed. Six others were wounded.

We could have done the same thing when Republican senators were shaking his right hand and handing him chemical and biologicql warfare capacity in the other. Oops I guess some of the germs escaped.

Most likely another dictator replacing him (one of his sons probably), or a civil war, followed by another dictator.

Don't be an idiot. Sayeret Matkal has pulled off some ridiculous ops, Entebbe for one. The U.S. really did a great job trying to pull off the same kind of op with the Iranian hostages, eh? I don't mean to rip on the United States armed forces, I would never do that, just telling you not to think Sayeret Matkal is some kind of boy scout troop. They are some of the most elite troopers in the world. I watched them come back from training missions where they have to RUN FOR A WEEK. Insane stuff, they are hardcore.
