TEL AVIV, Israel ?? Israel on Thursday cut off contact with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, charging that he was "directly responsible" for the latest bloody attacks that killed 10 Israelis and wounded more than 30 others.

The move appeared to throw into question a U.S. effort to arrange a truce to end more than 14 months of Palestinian-Israeli violence.

A statement released after Israel's Security Cabinet met in Tel Aviv said Arafat is "directly responsible for the series of attacks and therefore is no longer relevant to Israel, and Israel will no longer have any connection with him."

After the meeting, Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit said there would be no more contact with Arafat or his Palestinian Authority, including sessions of security commanders.

"We have been talking with the Palestinians at all levels for two years," Sheetrit said. "Now it is time for Israel to defend itself."

U.S. envoy Anthony Zinni has spent the last two weeks trying to implement a truce agreed last May. He has set up three meetings of Israeli and Palestinian security commanders, but the sessions degenerated into shouting matches, with each side blaming the other for continuing violence.

Arafat cannot stop the terrorists, which are his people. His policy of arresting Hamas members to appease Israel and the US, then release them a few days later to make his people happy is a joke. He's no longer effective, why talk to him.

Maybe the US should listen to all the Arab sympathizers and not middle in the affairs of the middle-east. Lets see what they'll whine about next.

Did you see the shots of the last 'arrests'? They weren't even handcuffed. Arafat is gone, even if he survives this, he's not going to have any political power.

<< This will stop only when one side is totally dead. >>

True. The US should leave them alone, let them sort it out.

Arafat refused a deal given to him by Barak, Israel previous PM, which could have given him a Palestinian state. Instead, Arafat refused, called up the intafada. Israel got tired of the suicide bombings, elected Sharon. Now things are out of control

I think Israel should let there war on terrorism go. I mean America had theirs against a half-a$$ country that had really no way of defending its self, we are only being hypocritical if we think Israel shouldn't be able to do the same.

I also think that the US should back out of this situation and cut military support for Israel... but then, if we do, and things go bad for the Israelis, who supposedly have nukes, this might get a lot worse.

Israel won the 48 and 67 defensive wars against virtually all the surrounding Arab nations combined. And they didn't just "win" these wars, they made the Arab nations their prison bitches in a matter of weeks in 48, and days in 67. This was BEFORE the US gave them any signifigant military aid.

I highly doubt their security rests on whether or not the US gives them aid.

Absolutely...

Israel is more than capable of taking care of itself... and they should.

The whole situation is sickening really... :(

Screw it... lets just have another world war and let the strong weed out the weak.

Close to a world war? I'd laugh, but I'm too shocked at the blind panic.

Tell me, just who will be involved in this "world war?"

laugh away.

Ok, seriously though, I'm thinking we don't have too much to worry about, but we are at a point in history where it wouldn't take much to set a major war off. World war is probably a little extreme, but a major war of at least vietnam calibre is not terrible unlikely. America has found a new enemy, it's in economic downturn, and it has been attacked. It could happen. hopefully won't, but to say it won't happen within the next 10-20 years is a little naive.

Yawp, in Israel, the Reform Jews will fight the Orthodox Jews. In what's left of the Muslim world, the Shii will fight the Sunni

The Israelis don't even need their nukes to spank the Arab world :) They've shown that they can put up a fight as good as anyone out there (Look at the history of wars Israel has fought with the countries around it...it's actually kinda funny how easy they win)
