The US could pressure them if it wanted to. Will that happen? No, unless there is major democratic (lowercase for you reading-challenged types) reform in this country.
Ummm, as the Israelis see it, the nukes are their insurance policy for the survival of their country. It's hard to come up with something that trumps that, especially in Israel's situation. What specific pressures is the US going to provide?
The US can take away its gigantic funding of Israel. If need be, it could have embargoes. Israel's long-term existance depends on the USA. Granted, Jews and Christian fanatics in the US won't let that happen but I'm talking normatively not in positive terms.
Personally, if it were up to me, I would stop the US government from subsidizing Israel. It annoys me that we continue giving money to people who keep spying on us.
However, their short term existance depends on being able to keep the surrounding countries from invading. US support can shift, and Israel can only do so much via lobbyists to affect that. Ultimately, they cannot guarantee perpetual strong US favor. It is just something that is not 100% under their control. Their nuclear arsenal is, however. Why give up a sure thing? Like I said, it is one very big trump card to be able to play, and they are playing for keeps. A US embargo wont do half as much damage as another war.
