ISR and seperate switch communicate?

So im upgrading the network of my grandparents tomorow. Im puting an 8 port switch in their basement so there will be internet readily avaliable down there. Basically the config is this, one wire directly running from the switch portion of their ISR (upstairs) and a second wire running down from their ISR to the new switch. I want to know if the devices connected directly to the ISR will be seen by the devices connected through the switch.

What is an ISR?

You know your "router", the one issued to you by your ISP...........thats not a router. Its an ISR, or integrated service router. Its a single port router attached to a 4 port switch, essentially serving as both in one unit. but both jobs are done much more effectivley with seperate peices controlling their respective roles.

So it's a combo modem/router. Got ya. Never heard them called "ISR" before.

If you attach a switch to the switch of the router, then devices plugged into both will be part of the same L2 broadcast domain, so yes they can communicate.

So unless i set up a VLAN/subnet they will share the same network? Therefore they can communicate with each other........gotcha.

We both learned somthing new.
