isn't there a site where I can search a bunch of used-car sites?

Let's say I want to buy a used Ford F-150 (model years 1999-2005) within 50 miles of me. Isn't there a site that will allow me to search several used car sites at once?

Also, is that kind of searching called "meta search"?

While we're on the topic, who has some good advice on finding/getting a deal on a used car? Only had one car in my life (bought at 17 with the help of my Dad) but for the last 5 years I've been living overseas w/o a car but I'll be moving back to the US later this month, so I'll need another. I've noticed even recent year cars (1999-2002) of Honda and Kia can be had for well under $4000, looking at ads in the local paper and craigslist.org

To the OP, my local paper allowed such a search from their website. But instead of miles, you selected the town/city from a drop-down list

I'm already working on it. I was just checking to see if there was any competition. Looks like there isn't!

I wish you better luck than I had when I tried this about a year ago. I was promptly contacted by several website that prohibited 2nd party searching of their sites. Ebay motors wasted no time having an attorney contact me.

They don't mind if you post an affiliate link to them from your site but they wouldn't allow what I was doing.

I found my current car by doing a search within 50 miles of me on Kelly Blue Book.

ETA - Like you OP, I knew exactly what I wanted. It took me less than 24 hours from searching to buying. :)

Are you going to give the site a try?

Yeah, I had to beg 20 people to become members!

Nope, I already have way to much on my plate but it's something I might pursue in 2007.

Do you still have a 'day job' or do you live off your web sites nowadays?

Continued success!

Do you think it violates the terms of sites like Ebay, autotrader.com, and edmunds.com, to search their site via another site?

www.cars.com
www.autotrader.com
I use them when I am just looking for the hell of it, most of the time on autotrader when you look at a car the dealerships website is linked there and you can usually look at all thier cars they have. That also depends on how often they have thier site updated with vehicles taken off that we sold or just bought too.

I hitup AutoTrader and Craig's List primarily. Bought my gf's 92 Camaro there. eBay Motors has been useless for me. Not enough of the cars I'm looking for and when they are, they're priced terribly. I'm sure there are deals to be had, but I want to see and inspect the car before I talk $.
