I thought there was a DVD player in winME. I can't find it, but I could have sworn it's there. -I'm not talking about the same thing that's avaliable in win98.

Yes, I think you're right. If I remember correctly, when I was installing ME, I saw or read something about Media Player 7 being able to play DVDs. I don't know if this is a normal feature of Media Player, or only a feature that is available with ME, though.

I use PowerDVD, so I haven't really looked into it, but I'll check on it tonight.

Windows Me comes a dvd player, the file is dvdplay.exe. But windows does not install any Decoder files. You have to install a third party program that installs the DVD CODEC's to use DVD player. I may be wrong but I don't think media player 7 can play DVD's....

DVD Player appears on the Start menu only if you have a DVD player and a hardware or software decoder installed. For more information, check with your DVD and computer manufacturers.

That's what help file says, anyway.....

I just installed ME on a new Gateway Solo 9300 CX with a good DVD player. MP7 does not play DVD movies . . . at least I could find no executable file for it. The ATI DVD player is installed and works perfectly ("Angela's Ashes" is now playing as I type.)

As for DVDPLAY.EXE . . . Yes, it is there and works just as well as the ATI . . . and the ATI codecs files may make it so. I have it running now . . . no problem. It has a nice control panel and has a feature the ATI Player lacks . . . it can capture an image from the movie! :)

I guess I was wrong on the Media Player--sorry.

I found DVDPLAY.EXE, but it wouldn't play any of my disks. I have a 3rd generation Toshiba DVD-ROM, but no hardware decoder. Maybe I have to have a hardware decoder to use the MS DVD player; I don't know.

I'll stick to PowerDVD.

You are not missing out on anything if you cannot get it to work, you are much better off with Power DVD

You don't need a hardware decoder as long as there is a software one installed such as ATI DVD Player. That is why mine works.

It is the Ati Rage Mobility built in to my Gateway Solo 9300 CX laptop.
