My sister came home today saying that her teacher will give her extra credit points if she goes and buys a tissue box. I remember my teachers use to do that back in highschool as well.

Shouldn't this be illegal? Isn't this pretty much like "pay me money to raise your grade"? I remember I had a teacher that asked students to bring in canned foods, 6 cans = 1 point. ISN"T THIS ILLEGAL!?

Don't the kids use the tissue? If so, she is just replacing what she used. Not illegal. The food cans were probably for a food drive. Now if the teacher takes the stuff home, the maybe. At least the teacher isn't asking for some other favor.

It's EXTRA credit, therefore optional. You don't HAVE to do it to raise your grade, but you can.

exactly. Above and beyond a normal workload. The student is getting punished/losing points for not bringing in kleenex, so there's no loss.

But only the richer kids will be able to buy a tissue box....

I'm sure someone could make a case and win if it was actually brought to court by one of our many anal people in this world.

I remember my teachers doing something similar in elementary school. No one cared, extra credit is extra credit. You put out the effort, you get the points. Plus the tissue was for the students as well, so it benefitted everyone. Kids brought in the boxes, and then the teacher would put a box out. As soon as it was used up, she put out another and so on. It was mainly for the student's use, not for the teachers.
