Isn't the Opteron 180 and the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ the same thing basically?

They're both dual-core, 2MB L2 Cache, same socket, and the same frequency. They're pretty much the same thing, eh?

They SHOULD be the same, but I wouldn't bet on it. Socket 939 Opterons should be the same as A64 San Diegos but they're not, they tend to clock higher on stock or close to stock voltage but gain little benefit from more vcore. I would expect that this is because of the way they are validated (as in binned), AMD looks for "something" in its server processors which has this effect.

From what Ive read, the core is different. I know someone here is running a dual core Opteron and his memory speeds (with the same RAM and mobo) were much higher because of the improved memory controller.

I've heard the Opterons go through more stringent tests, and are built with the most premium grade silicon. The reason for this is that Opterons are designed to go into servers that are always working at their full load. I think HendrixFan is right in that they also have an improved memory controller.

i agree they are better... but they are pickier as well...

setting that would work for A64's don't seem to work as well for the opty.

you need to mess with the MAL and preamble settings to get more stability.
