Isn't RAID 0 perfectly safe if you just ghost your drives to a third one every week? So if one fails, just replace it and install the ghost image.

It's safer, but no setup is perfectly safe.
You also a weeks worth of data if it goes down.
RAID 0+1 is safer, because you have a direct mirror which always updates, but then things like viruses can fvck up both arrays.

It's always a good idea to back up important data, RAID0 or not.

Disk images are not adequate backup - a FbF (file-by-file) backup program is the only thing that will do. If you loose one (or a few) bytes in an image file, you can lose either all of the file or whatever is past the error in the file. With FbF, you only lose the one file with an error in it.
. Disk images are for minimizing down time (faster restore than FbF). Best to do both image and FbF backups.

RAID 0 is perfectly safe if you aren't anal. ;) I don't think I or my dad has had any hard drive kill us in the past 10 years, and we've only had maybe one that died (and that was a slow death, so we knew).

This depends greatly on what you are doing. If all you do is play games, surf the web, check your e-mail and play MP3's, it's just fine. In that case, who really cares if you lose your data?

However, if you keep track of your finances, run a home business, have a ton of digital images with sentimental value, or any other kind of vital data, then not keeping a backup bad idea.

There is a very good change you'll never have a problem. However, when you do have a problem, you'll be a very, very unhappy person if you didn't backup your important files.

I absolutely. The fac that there is an increased chance that you will lose everything on the drives, while true, is so blown out of proportion on here. I wouldn't use it for critical data (ie my backup drive), but I see no reason why you couldn't use it, especially with its performance advantages. I think the perfect setup would be to put the boot partition on a RAID 0 array, then have a larger drive for storage. But I've never had a hard drive fail on me, and the only time I've lost any data in a RAID array was from stupidity.... Not even RAID 1 protects from accidental formats. :)
