I just installed 1.1.0. it seems slower than office xp. I mean the gui is just slow to respond in the way that most java apps are
also I read some old threads that said "the dictionary sucks". is this still true?

yeah, but slower

I really wish there were more FAST free software. forget all that "standards-based" xul, etc stuff. I just want programs that are fast, free, simple, and elegant

Yeah. Open Office is a lot slower to load on my computer than MS Office. I use Word from my copy of Works and Open Office for everything else. Firebird is only slower when I first load it. After that, it's nice and speedy.

Yes I agree, both OO and Firebird are noticeably slower to load, but once they are loaded they are nice a speedy...especially FB.

Not for me. It doesn't take any longer to load up than IE, but browsing pages is much much slower. I really wanted to like it, but there's no way I'm going to put up with that.

If it's really "much, much" slower something is wrong on your end. I have noticed that Galeon is noticably faster than Firebird though, but both should be comparable to IE on most pages.

Ok, significantly slower. It's not unbearable, but considering IE loads things almost instantaneously for me, the slowdown with firebird very noticeable. It very well could be that something isn't working properly, but I would have no idea what that something is or how I would go about fixing it. Maybe I'll try a newer version of firebird whenever one is released.

Not to be an apologist, but from what I've read, OpenOffice's crew claims that comparasions between office and openoffice are biased because Office puts hooks into the OS that are on all the time, making Office appear much faster than it actually is. The Taskbar prog is supposted to counteract this somewhat.. did you turn it off?

Same with mozila/firebird and IE. IE is as much a part of the OS as Windows Explorer.
