Isn't it about time for some new video cards?

Been out of the loop for quite some time and it seems there's really nothing new...

When's the next gen of cards due out and what kind of speeds are expected? What are the proposed name/numbering schemes... Targeting new build around thanksgiving time.

Thanks.

Lol you MUST have been out of the loop.

AMD/ATI and Nvidia JUST finished rounding out (or are still in the process of rounding out) their latest HD6xxx and GTX500 series. Next batch of cards from AMD are rumored to be out sometime around Q3/4 this year at the earliest, god knows when at the latest. Currently there is no news whatsoever about the expected time frame from Nvidia, although I assume they'd be trying to release in the same ballpark as their competitor.

There is no real meaty information on specs for the cards as yet, and one would assume they would follow the established naming convention for current gen cards.

Sig rig is about 5 years old... I started reading up about a year ago and the 500 series were already out there... I guess just a refresh to the 585 then? Seems kinds meh... Hopefully the Q3/4 cards will be out more Q3 than Q4. I was thinking next gen past the 500 series - something special at almost twice the speed. I guess that's too much to ask...

Nvidia released the 580/570 in December 2010, and the 560 in January (or maybe vice versa, can never remember), with ATI dropping the 6950 and 6970 in January. The Nvidia 590 (2x GPU on a card) and ATI 6990 (2x GPU card) both came out more recently. Not sure which 585 you are referring to? The ATI 5850 maybe?

We aren't on the 6 month total line-up refresh path anymore, which I think is a good thing. I doubt either vendor will have new architecture out by November, but it's certainly possible.

I've lost interest until there is actually a number of decent games that require something more that my 4870 can't get me by on. There might be 2 or 3 games like that out now, but we won't see then coming regularly until next gen consoles in ~2012, and even then maybe 2013 before there are lots of decent games.

The Wii2 being announced soon was surprising but I think all it's going to do is put the Wii hardware on par with the 360/PS3 (they will finally embrace HD).

Thanksgiving is a ways off
I'm personally waiting for 28nm or whatever node will replace 40nm

but the idle values on them have been getting a TON better...

There used to be no idle mode on gpu's.

In his cave? He does call himself "caveman" after all.

GTX 285 versus GTX 580
GTX 580 beats the GTX 285 in five of the eight power consumption, noise level and temperature metrics. Yet it beats the GTX 285 in EVERY SINGLE performance metric, averaging around twice as fast.

If that isn't progress, then you need your progress meter re-calibrated.

As mentioned, rumours have been swirling about AMD releasing a product around August. I expect a 28nm lower-midrange 77XX "pipecleaner" product from AMD around the start of back-to-school season, then a high end release in time for the Christmas shopping season.

If you remember Anands artice "Showing up for the fight", their are certain marketing bumps you try to hit. Christmas shopping season is a big one, and back-to-school is a smaller one.

Although their are no rumors concerning them, I expect nVidia to follow suit and release similar products at the same time frames.
