Fort Lewis soldier accidentally killed by wife
OLYMPIA, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier died instantly early Sunday when his wife accidentally shot him in the head as he was teaching her how to handle a handgun.
Deputies were called to the scene, in the 4300 block of Quail Run Loop NW in Olympia, at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Chris Mealy of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.
Mealy said the soldier and his wife, both 25, had been out with friends having a good time, possibly celebrating an upcoming deployment for the soldier. They were drinking, but it is not known if they were drunk.
After the couple got home, the soldier decided to teach his wife how to handle a semi-automatic handgun, Mealy said.
While the wife was holding the gun, she accidentally discharged the firearm. A single shot struck the husband in the head.
His wife tried to resuscitate him, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
The soldier was identified as Eric J. Autio.
Mary Moore lives nearby and said she was awakened when she heard the shot.
"I so looked forward to having them come here for dinner tonight," Moore said in an interview Sunday evening. "I've been crying most of the day. They were so young. They were so young. They were very nice."
The couple had just moved to Washington four days ago from the Midwest.
Due to the wife's high level of stress, the Army is taking care of her. She is not under arrest and at this time authorities believe the fatal shooting was an accident.
The incident remains under investigation. An autopsy is expected to be performed Tuesday.
