Fort Lewis soldier accidentally killed by wife

OLYMPIA, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier died instantly early Sunday when his wife accidentally shot him in the head as he was teaching her how to handle a handgun.

Deputies were called to the scene, in the 4300 block of Quail Run Loop NW in Olympia, at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Chris Mealy of the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.

Mealy said the soldier and his wife, both 25, had been out with friends having a good time, possibly celebrating an upcoming deployment for the soldier. They were drinking, but it is not known if they were drunk.

After the couple got home, the soldier decided to teach his wife how to handle a semi-automatic handgun, Mealy said.

While the wife was holding the gun, she accidentally discharged the firearm. A single shot struck the husband in the head.

His wife tried to resuscitate him, but her efforts were unsuccessful.

The soldier was identified as Eric J. Autio.

Mary Moore lives nearby and said she was awakened when she heard the shot.

"I so looked forward to having them come here for dinner tonight," Moore said in an interview Sunday evening. "I've been crying most of the day. They were so young. They were so young. They were very nice."

The couple had just moved to Washington four days ago from the Midwest.

Due to the wife's high level of stress, the Army is taking care of her. She is not under arrest and at this time authorities believe the fatal shooting was an accident.

The incident remains under investigation. An autopsy is expected to be performed Tuesday.

epic fail

He should have known better than to hand her a loaded gun.

Rule #1 - All guns are always loaded (or should be treated as such)
Rule #2 - Never put your finger on the trigger until your sights are on the target (if your husbands head isn't the target, well ya...)
Rule #3 - Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy

It's a soldier - the majority of them aren't the brightest people on the planet -- and they are used to recklessly pointing and shooting at easy targets.

So you teach someone to use a gun when loaded and the safety off...

Darwin wants to thank you.

triple this. no, not everyone knows how to handle guns because a lot of people never come into contact with one.

also this.

Darwin took care of that real fast. Thankfully there wasn't someone who was "unstupid" downrange.

hell, my sks is in the closet, with the firing pin out... there is no way i'd let my wife handle something like that....

Alcohol and fire arms dont go well together.

True. Instructing someone on how to handle a loaded gun isn't very bright either.

The only place a n00b should be handling a loaded gun is at a shooting range in a controlled environment and only after careful instruction.

WTF are you doing with a loaded gun inside your house?

Because unloaded ones are pretty much worthless?

The only time you should have a loaded, chambered gun is when you're about to shoot something.

It's INCREDIBLY stupid to be handing a loaded gun just for fun, as the op illustrates.

Just another reason not to let women handle guns... they are not used to things firing for no reason on their own. 😉
