Isn't donating blood pretty much like a free blood test?

yes

They also ask you verbally and in writing if you are donating only to be tested

Sure diseases are screened but I doubt you'll get a cholesterol count and other information from it. Or maybe you do, don't like needles so I try to stay away.

The screening includes testing for diseases that can be transmitted by a blood transfusion, including HIV and viral hepatitis. The donor is also asked about medical history and given a short physical examination to make sure that the donation is not hazardous to his or her health.

When I donated on campus once many years ago they provided a cholesterol count. They also told me my blood was not usable for some odd reason so I have never donated since. It might have been because I have an abnormally high white cell count all the time. I don't get infections though.

False. Then practically nobody would be able to donate.

No, they test for it. There are many forms of herpes. One is CMV. Something like 60% of adults have it. You can still donate if you have it, they just need to know before they give the blood to someone.

Every time I've gone to the clinic I have gotten a free STD screening. I didn't think people had to pay for blood tests....

I can understand if you went to a real doctor to get medical work, and not just an STD screening.

IIRC, this question is right by the one where they ask you if you have had gay sexorz or if you've been to Africa

So basically they make you pay tons at a doctor for those tests, when theyre free if you give blood. Weird.

Free cholesterol test, free juice/snacks, and a free T-shirt (most of the time). Cholesterol test history is saved online (Carter BloodCare). I've never seen a question asking if the free test is the motivation for donating.

Also, I believe they'll notify you if one of the disease tests comes back positive, otherwise no news is good news.

I donate in Texas with Carter Bloodcare or Red Cross.

The tests you get for free aren't that expensive at a doctor's.

I bet it would be at least $100. Why pay that when you can get it for free just by giving your blood to someone else who needs it? Win win situation.
