ISA Network Cards?

Hello All:

I have an extra box I would like to start cracking with, but it only has an ISA slot free. My network hub only supports 100Mbit ethernet. Does anyone know a good place to buy 10/100 ISA network cards? I've looked on-line and can only find PCI.

-thanks

Are you sure your hub is 100 Mb ONLY? Most hubs that support 100 Mb also run 10 Mb.

It's going to be very hard to find an ISA NIC that will do 10/100, since the ISA bus can't even run 100 Mb. 🙂 I believe either Intel or 3Com makes a 10/100 ISA NIC for situations where the entire network has to be running 100 Mb, but I'm sure the NIC is pretty expensive.

Correct me if I am wrong. But if your hub is only 100MB then wouldn't your NIC detect that? And run at 100MB?

I've got a hub that ONLY supports 100baseT.

Sukhoi is correct, I think it won't be easy to find an ISA Nic that does 100. However, I do see they have USB NIC's that are 10/100. I'll check those out.

3COM makes a 10/100 ISA card. It is a model 3c515. I have used them successfully in a 486/133 Linux box. However, 3COM is very upfront in saying that the card can only do about 20 Mbits/sec due to limitations of the ISA bus. But it will "talk" 100 Mbits, so it should work with your hub.

PS. I found my 3c515 cards on fleabay, and if you really need one, drop me a note. I'm thinking I'm not gonna use them after all).

I've got five hubs here that ONLY support 100bT:

(3) HP 24port
(1) Cisco 16port
(1) LinkSys 8port

Since nearly all my machines at home have 10/100 cards, this hasn't been a problem; if I need to hook up a 10bT nic, I'd just plug it into a cheap 5port switch.

I believe a friend of mine had an old box with an Intel 10/100 nic in it (ISA). I can't recall a model # though. I'll see if I can dig anything up.

Dlink made a couple, I have one at home, but I would have to look at it.

Intel has a couple models that can do 10/100 but they are not made anymore. I would check second hand computer stores or E-bay.

I think those Intel cards were EtherXpress ones... We had some in some old servers. But I'm not sure if they were run-of-the-mill ISAs. I think they were EISA (which has a slightly different slot configuration, ie., 64 bits wide?).
