IS7 & P4 2.4C Temperatures

Confuse

Member
Hi, I'm currently running an Abit IS7 and P4 2.4C and according to Winbond Hardware Doctor my P4 is running at 45-50C idle. Isn't that a bit high? I'm using stock cooling as well. I was wondering what kind of temperatures you guys are getting using the stock hs/f without overclocking. I am aware that there have been reports of Abit boards reporting slightly higher temperatures, but I don't know how much higher.

I called Intel and they said those temps are within their specs, but they still seem a bit high to me. The guy said there might be a ventilation problem with my case (37C) also, I have 3 panaflo fans and an Allied 450W 2 fans one on back and front sucking air in and out. Would you guys recommend investing in some Artic Silver 3? And where might I find this stuff in a store perhaps (not online)? Thanks in advance!

I know my CompUSA sells Arctic Silver 3 instore. I don't have any experience with that setup though. My Asus P4P800 Deluxe and P4 2.6C runs at 39C load and 36-8C idle. Stock cooling with AS3- no overclocking.

Hope that helps.

I also have an IS7 + P4 2.4c. I have mine overclocked to 3.0ghz. My load temps are around 45-50c, while idle is around 38-40c. I don't have the stock cooler though, I'm running a Vantec Aeroflow with some AS3.

Before I put in the Vantec and AS3, I did have the stock cooler installed, and I found that the new combination dropped my temps just a few degrees C.

Confuse,

It would be best to remove that thermal "tape" and get some AS3 on there..

Did u remove the foil that is under the heatsink..? That had my temps way up..

😀

My 2.4C didn't have any foil, so be really careful about that advice.

You are running a bit high, but from my understanding Abits read high compared to other MBs (common figure is 10C high, but that may be a high quote). Yrs, the issue in general with these CPUs is more what to do with the heat once it's off the CPU, so case cooling becomes more crucial. Case circulation is critical, try to mabe sure you're not obstructing air flow in the case with cables or whatever. Also, you want to position the fans low intake high out. I'd also recommend a fan behind the Northbrige to pull heat away from the CPU and out of the system before it can heat up the rest of the air in the case. You might want to remove the case grills and replace them with something a little less restrictive. This may be too much of a pain, because if you have to cut it you have to disassemble it to make sure no shavings get into your electronics. Also, since you have 2-rear, 1-front determine where your make up air is coming from. On my old system it was passing across my SCSIs so it was being heated coming in. Just like air conditioning a house, only much simpler.

I believe you can get it at Office Max or Office Depot, someone here could tell you. It will take some effort to remove the thermal pad. The CPU wasn't a problem so much, but I could see that the HS removal would take something more. Don't get the more powerful solvents near your MB. IPA 99% with coffee filters should be fine for cleaning the CPU, I haven't tried the Heat Sink. Something like Goof Off, maybe, but be careful with the plastic parts.
