Is your Yahoo account sending spam?

Had a friend call me today saying that some of her friends just called her about spam emails with her name on it.

I told her to change her email password. She said that when went to check her email, Yahoo automatically prompted her to change her password before going to her inbox (she only accesses through IE). We found a couple emails from Yahoo about "users" reporting this issue, and the prompt being sent for security concerns, but there was no security breach on Yahoo servers.

Honestly, this left me a little confused. She is my only contact that uses Yahoo, so I am not sure if this was a message from Yahoo about an issue that is affecting multiple customers, or a non-direct way of Yahoo saying that something from her account (either internally or externally) caused the issue.

Any of you all receive a message like this? The only recent news I see about Yahoo is that they are circling the drain closer than ever.

So far nothing and I haven't received anything from my contacts who use Yahoo. Did you look at the email headers to see where they came from? A year or two ago my contact list or a portion of it was accessed from my Gmail account. No idea how it was done but they emailed 4-5 people just spoofing my account. Mail didn't actually come from Google but somehow my contacts were accessed. Happened once and never again.

Thanks. Hopefully that's all it was. It may have just been Yahoo's attempt at not pointing a finger.

I get this a lot, and it actually happened to me - makes some bit of sense too. Many people probably had a Yahoo account way back when, and probably had even worse passwords than they do now - I did. I was alerted (this is probably back in 2010 or so) when I had a message fail to send to one of my contacts (entered incorrectly). [edit, it was a spam message, not mine, but the contact was wrong so it got rejected.] There were no sent messages saved, nothing overtly indicating HACK HACK HACK when I got into the account (I can't remember if the password was even changed!).

Since then, I have often received the:

"Hey notposting,
how's it going? Would you like to click on this totally legit link for good times?! http://totallyevilurl.with.amillionwarningsigns/erections/boobs/money/yousucka.com
Thanks,
your pal Yahooligan"

I'm on the old contact lists, with my name, so they look legit at first...this is from friends, family, even legit small business types. Also, pretty sure Yahoo has been busted several times now, they just like to phrase it differently. And silently.

There is malware that will steal your contacts list. JFYI

Yahoo sometimes bugs me to change my password, despite that fact I use PWDHash and it's VERY complicated. I know damn well no one hacked it unless The SSL was weak or off.
