And nobody but the hardcore, hardware community is even going to be able to run these (initially). 🙁

this is my dad's computer. do they expect you to go buy these things according to their site, an x2 3800 isn't enough. you need a 4200 minimum.

I think the whole HDCP and bluray fiasco is a bunch of ****.

The requirements are ridiculous, DVD's didnt have these requirements. DVDS were easy to adpot, why else did it become so popular?

DVDs also had hardware decoder cards that you could purchase if your CPU wasn't powerful enough or you wanted to free up your CPU to do other things while playing DVDs. Wonder if they'll bring decoder cards in for HD-DVD and BluRay. Frankly I don't really care and I'm not going to be watching movies on my PC. I'll wait till the format war is over and then buy the winner for my home theater.

Oh man, those where the days. I remember buying the Creative DVD-ROM + Encore Dxr2 decoder card package to watch Species on my compaq desktop.

IMHO, this whole HD-Blueray deal is a joke. Format war, high dollar equipment, packed to the gills with DRM, competing against a mature technology that is near universal already.....yeah, this is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Dude, I think I still have mine. Then I upgraded to the Hollywood decoder card.

Yes it is.

No optical drive but it certainly can play rips.

Where's blue-ray shrink?

😀

Remix time. Definitely for over 40 crowd here. (Carl Perkins anyone?)

:music:
Well, it's one for the money,
Two for the show,
Three to get ready,
Now go, cat, go.

But don't you step on my blue ray shrink.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue ray shrink.

Well, you can knock me down,
Step in my face,
Slander my name
All over the place.

Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
MPAA, lay off of my 'shrink
Don't you step on my Blue ray shrink.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue ray shrink.

You can burn my house,
Steal my car,
Drink my liquor
From an old fruitjar.

Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
MPAA, lay off of my 'shrink
Don't you step on my blue ray shrink.
You can do anything but lay off of my blue ray shrink.

Yep. People compare the move from DVD>HD-DVD/Blu-Ray to VHS>DVD, but it is far from it. This is a whole new game, and this may take a looong time for the general public to adopt. It took a good while for the general public to finally move to DVD because they were fine with their VHS tapes, and the move DVD offered quite a few more benefits than just a an image improvement. Now with the new HD standards, you'll HAVE to buy an expensive player (understandable since it is a new technology), the discs are more expensive to buy and most importantly, it will REQUIRE you to buy an HDTV to see the benefits of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I just see this as a VERY slow move to these players, which would also slow down the standardization of a single HD format. I'm planning on buying a new plasma next year and an HD-DVD player (screw Sony and Blu-Ray), but I'm not the norm. The general public isn't so quick to jump on the "next big thing."
