Is your 7900GT performing as expected?

After a quick search, I decided to post a poll about people's experiences with their 7900gt. After I started having issues with my card, I looked to see if anyone else was having any problems, and it seems that it's not uncommon. If anyone knows anything about this situation, that would be great. I'm waiting for an answer from XFX support right now. If you guys could post your model and results, that would help us figure things out maybe.

My model: XFX Xtreme 520/1500

Problems: Screen blanking after entering 3D mode, corruption on desktop when attempting to change clock frequencies, artifacts in games.

Yes. Mine are overclocked at 675/1900 with a vmod. Well, I was suppose to be running 2 7900GT's in SLI but one of the was basically DOA because after a short while (even without any vmodding it would artifact). Luckly I didn't vmod that card yet, so it's still under warrenty and I can RMA it. :) Glad I got an evga one now.

Overall, yes (one of them at least) is working right and overclocks extreamly well.

Now that I think about it I might have fvck'ed up the second card so it might be my fault, but it still falls under warrenty. Oh well, nothing I can do about it.

If your having problems with a 7900GT, most companies will be more than happy to replace it for you (at least with evga, you can get cross shipping so I send something out I get a new card 2-3 days later :))

My xfx 550/1630 gt overclocks to 560/1690 with an nv5 silencer, it actually did that with the stock cooler too. A little voltage bump might fix this :)

Hmm..... maybe I'm just lucky :) The problems only seem to show up after a few days for most people (from what I've read), which is why I added that last option. My card was really great for a few days then yesterday when I got home..... just terrible :(

So I gather you'll RMA it? There was a bad first batch wit evga too. I guess one of my cards came from the bad batch and the other from the second (better) batch. Maby the same happen to your xfx?

Yeah, it's quite possible.... there is what looks like a date on my card "W04/06" I wonder if that means April 6th? I'm really disappointed...I was looking forward to getting into Oblivion, and now my new LCD is sitting idle with a brand new rig :(

You might want to be a lot more detailed in your OP about the problem, the symptoms, etc. Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about but if I hadn't gone through it with my card I would be like WTH are you talking about. For example your poll has an option that says "no I'm havin the issues described in this post". You talk of a bad card but no post so far states any specific issue only a very brief one in your topic summary. Just my $.02.

Now for my card it is an EVGA 7900GT CO that I got early on in the step up process in Apil. The EVGA forums have a few threads with a lot of people having the screen blanking problem, lockups, artifacting etc. It all seems to come down to an issue with the memory and after the card starts to act up the only way to get it work is to underclock the memory. The EVGA engineers had some people try a new bios but in most cases didn't seem to solve the issue. RMA seemed to be the only option. Some people were on their 3rd or 4th RMA before getting a card that didn't go bad after a few days. I just got my card back a week and a half ago and knock on wood seems to be doing okay, even overclocked on the gpu and mem.

I got the same exact card and I installed a Zalman VF700-CU on it. The card is running flawlessly for me at 550/800. Optimal clocks per Coolbits says I can run at 599/820 or so, but 550/800 is plenty fast for the gaming I do.

im on my first RMA card as I type, first day...we shall see if it holds up :( at least EVGA made the rma process almost painless...

The reason the problem seems to be so large is that it mainly affects eVGA cards, and eVGA is currently popular becuase they are perceived as consumer friendly due to their stepup program and better than average support, thus there are more people with the problem.

I stepped up from a 7800GT CO to a 7900GT (N560, regular with no HSF covering memory).

For the brief time I had the card, Coolbits auto-detected the clock speeds at 581/1600. I sold the card to a friend, but those are some insane clock speeds for that card and no volt modding.

Good OverClocker: 650 / 17000 @ 1.4v (Conductive Pen Mod)

Model: CLUB3D stock = 450/ 1320 @ 1.2v

Thanks for the suggestion... I added some information about the exact problems I'm having.

There are some claims that cleaning the printed circuit board with alcohol could cure the problem.
Is that not true?

Well, last night I tried very hard to clean everything off with alchol and it didn't seem to help at all. Some people have said they've had success with it though. I think it's hard to say whether or not they are related... could have been the same issues caused by something else, like an overly dirty board on an otherwise good card.

It is true, i've experinced the before and after. Very true if you have "blanking" problems. I think the graphite from the pencil mod can muddle up everything when it gets blown around the other electronics. Others claim the cards arn't cleaned well before shippment and have semi conductive film that prevents the card working to its full potential. What ever the reason... It worked wonders for me.

I can run ATItool at Core:678 MHz Mem:1986 for 10min straight and no artifacts. But ~1 hour or so into a game and my computer reboots. I'm thinking it may be a power or mosfet overheat problem but I have yet to nail it down.

When I bench 600/1850 i start to get some artifacting... other than that its working fine. When my waterblocks get here Im going to VMOD it to 1.55v and hopefully get 750mhz ot of it.

I get bad artifacting in Far Cry and have no clue why, it's the only game that does. If I take the clocks back to stock it works though...

My eVGA 7900GT CO (500/1500) worked great for 3 days. Then corruption, screen would freeze, and monitor would go black. RMA'd, replacement arrived yesterday, day1 ok........

I wonder at times whether or not these problems are caused by the really low prices, that they are pushing all the components they use to save money and maintain their margins.

Why do you say that? I thought there were many cards from other manufacturers that showed the same symptoms.

My eVGA 7900GT's CO SC's sucked. At stock, they would crash to the desktop every 20 mins or so when attempting to play Oblivion and they had this weird jittery thing in WoW. Those were the only games I bothered trying before I took em back.

I wonder if I should try and return it to the vendor (ncix) and go for an ATI?
