Is Yamaha 8x8x24 IDE CD-RW drive good? (no SCSI)

Hey all...

I've got the option of getting the Yamaha 8x8x24 IDE CD-RW for ~ $80 shipped because I have a couple bestbuy.com gift certs. Should I go with it or get the Plextor 8x4x32 at buy.com for ~ $160?

I kinda want to skimp but I dunno... I got in on a deal for the Smart & Friendly CD TurboWriter RW (6x4x24 IDE) during the Value America fiasco ($120) but it just isn't being friendly. First of all some crappy Mac/PC combo disk for my Umax Scanmaker X6 almost made it pop out the side of the computer. That disk serious screwed with the drive. Had to do a hard shut down because it locked up tight.

While the drive works just fine it doesn't like cheapo media like the Kingston 8x stuff from outpost.com (which I have 6 x 50 packs of sitting right here).

So basically time for a new drive and the old one gets flea bayed. Which drive? Plextor or Yamaha.

I waver because:

1) 8x RW! That is kinda sweet!
2) Half the cost due to certs.

EDIT: oh yeah, and no SCSI. I don't want SCSI. Yeah, it's great, yadda yadda, but no, no SCSI. Also I do have a second drive now so my burner won't be used for wasteful reading. If only these Philips/Toshiba 6x DVD drives from the OfficeMax deal didn't lock up sometimes...

Ok, no matter how much better Plextor is than Yamaha, I dont think its very smart to give up this incredible deal.

Yamaha is way underrated.

Hrm... I agree, I'm leaning towards the Yamaha.

gamecopyworld.com ranks the Yamaha's up there but apparently they can't do DAO in RAW mode. I'm not a big warez freak or whatever but I do have a PSX. DAO would be nice...

Yeah, I guess I only cared because it would be cool to copy them perfectly. I have a modchip in the PSX of course.

Hrm... This is odd. My Ricoh 7060A (badged as a Smart & Friendly yadda yadda) is suddenly working with the Kingson media after I put a cdr in there and blew air in while it closed. Maybe it is a bit dusty in there?

Sorry to be so damn windy and reply to my own post so much but it appears that the Ricoh 7060a is humming along just fine now... I blew a bit more air in and no problems.

I guess I'll save the Best Buy certs for a future purchase (hopefully a 12x cdr when they come down in price).

I have the Yamaha you are talking about and have been very happy with it, though you seem all set now:)

Where I work, we sell the Yamaha and I NEVER get them back. As far as performance, I'm ALWAYS seeing the Yamaha ranked high second only to the Plextor.

At that price I'd say "go for it"!

Yes I agree with you both wholeheartedly, but on this very forum, I can almost certainly say that the Plextor is rated superior and leagues above Yamaha.

I'd rank plextor above yamaha, but yamaha is certainly second.

The yamaha drives are great, I've had really good experiences with them.

I'd go for it, though if your S&F is ok now I guess you don't need to.

Yamaha seems to have very good reliablity. If you can get the yamaha cheap a plextor isnt worth it.

You want to talk about reliability....

I have had the SAME TEAC 4X12 SCSI CDR for FOUR YEARS! ;)

Check this.... I know someone with a Plextor SCSI burner that is 6 years old! 1X of course! :p
