Is X10 still the way for home automation?

I'm thinking about homebrewing a security system that would text message me or call me if either of two motion sensors went off... I think this would be fairly simple to accomplish with an off-the-shelf home automation system, but I was wondering what is en vogue now-a-days?

It cracks me up because years and years from now X10 will be remembered as the "Pioneers" of this technology:laugh:

I remember reading a hell of a lot about them back in the late 90's... I was just wondering if they were still the 800lb gorilla in the room?

If you are starting, X10 is the budget place to start. Once things start failing and need replaced, then you switch to Levinton or one of the other brands.

I now have mine tied into my email account to allow for light changes from my cell. Works pretty well. But takes a lot of tweeking to get it set up correctly and noise makers isolated.

I would be sort of curious too. My HT receiver (Kenwood VR-2080) is dated by today's standards, but it does hve support for X10 modules. There's a menu in the LCD remote for home automation. It came out around the time this kind of thing was big (1998ish). I always sort of wondered about it.
