Which EQ? And what time period of EQ? I'd say EQ back in 1999 and 2000 was loads better than WoW is today.

Why? All the EQ love seems like selective memory to me.

It wasn't that great, nor any different than today's MMORPGs. Camp, spawn, kill, roll for phat lewt, gain 40 pounds from Doritos, repeat. Whether you were doing it in the Frog King's throne room or the plane of air*, it was exactly the same.

*I left before RoK, so those were a few of the "big ones" then. No, waiting 8 hours for the frog to drop a SoY was not fun.

You're right, it wasn't necessarily fun. But I played on Tallon Zek, which was like a whole different game. I've yet to experience anything even close to it in any other MMORPG released.

Original EQ holds a lot of great memories for people as their first mmorpg. I'd say the best part of EQ was the community. The friends I made in EQ I still talk to or game with regularly.

Arguing better doesn't work. The games are too varied to truely compare.

yes. I played EQ for years, then DAoC for over a year (still my fav), lineage 2 and now WoW. WoW is the best overall experience out imo. Not a heckuva lot to do when you hit max level that doesn't involve huge time consuming raids, but since DAoC has no player base practically and TOA is widely known to have ruined the game WoW is your best bet. Some friends are in the DnD beta and it's ok but just not as good as wow.

EDIT: Yeah the diff between EQ 1 and wow was EQ1 had a phenominal community, WoW is all 12y.o.s growing an epeen. You can find great people but most of them still take naps.

I'm playing EQ2 now, quit WoW. It's a lot more in depth, but it needs some serious PvP.

RoK, SoV and even SoL added a lot to the game. MMORPGs aren't for everyone, if you disliked this experience which many others considered almost magical, perhaps you're simply wired differently and should instead play FPSs, RTSs, driving games, etc.

For the OP: EQ '99-'02 > *

Meh = WoW > EQ 1 & 2 currently.

I can't agree to the blanket statements.

EQ raiding quality and quantity >>> WoW

WoW 1 group content > EQ for the most part. EQ is definately turning around in this department with the last 4 expansions. Huge amount of single group progression.

Haven't played EQ2 in quite a while. Been told there is a ton of raid content, but that EQ1 raid content is better.

EQ community can't even be compared to the WoW community. Night and day difference. It seems to me its just much more effort to form new friendships in WoW when soloing is so damn easy.

Blizzard vs SOE: a wash. It looks like only non-mega companies are capable of providing the proper level of service to the mmo industry (EVE online has great developers.) SOE and Blizzard aren't horrible, but both do a lot of questionable things.

Quite true, which is why I've not even thought about going MMO since realizing the "RP" in "MMORPG" is a misnomer. It doesn't matter how magical the experience, it's impossible to roleplay your character when every other person you run into asks for a "sow plz!!one!1one!".

Yeah, you're right. This is the main reason I simply can't get into any modern MMORPG's - no one stays in character. Back in EQ first came out, a decent percentage of players attempted to at least stay in character. But after I joined a PvP server, there was simply no coming back. I'd say at least 50% of the server roleplayed, or at least played along if they saw you were roleplaying. Back in 99-2000, it wasn't the monster killing, raids, leveling, or equipment that made EQ such a magical experience. It was the players and the roleplaying that came together to create the most enjoyable and engaging game i've ever played.
