Is working out tricep muscles by themselves a waste of time?

I just got back from the gym and i did 7 sets on the bench press and 4 sets of dips... my triceps felt like they were going to explode... is it really necessary to do individual tricep workouts for myself?

If you are doing chest, and your Triceps are getting burn out, you are not going wide enough..

Granted you always hit your triceps slightly in chest, if your grip is close, you are hitting TOO much triceps..

Definitely dedicate a day of Tri's!

It is the muscle that makes your arms look large!

Not imo but some more hardcore BB guys would say yes...

You already did BP = they are worked well. How wide is your grip? And you did Dip = lot of tricep focus. How low do you go?

I take it you already do Military Presses right? More tricep work for you.

With a good all around training schedule they'll be worked out.

When i do bench presses, my grip is a little more than shoulder wide... i feel like my triceps and shoulders are doing most of the work while the chest is kinda secondary actually (although my chest feels tight the next day usually).

Exactly, but you don't want to go nuts and go SUPER wide to the point where it feels odd..

I typically do Chest and Biceps, and hit triceps on a different day..

I work out my triceps separately. I like to feel an overall burn when I'm done. When I do chest, I then go and isolate on triceps, just to get that extra burn.

PL = Power Lifting

In competition there is a 'set' distance that you are allowed from "thumb to thumb". Normally bars have this 'ring' on them and that is 'roughly' where the distance is but if you have bigger hands you can move either side of them.

It is just an easy marker so people don't have to measure their distance and are 'familar' with their distance to whatever the bar is. The markings are standard on all OL (Olympic Lifting) bars.

More leg work is needed. More leg = better progress through bringing your body to create more testerone = bigger overall faster then less leg work.

You need to do at least one Tri isolation exercise, IMO. I usually do all my chest exercises, then do a 4 sets of close grip bench press, 3-4 sets of cable tricep extensions, and then some skull crushers.
