Is winxp firewall good for a home user ?

I'm using an "always on" broadband connection..and when I checked my system events viewers, I've got this msg "Received a PPPoE Session packet for an unknown session. Ignoring this packet." I'm thinking of getting a personnal firewall. So is winxp intergrated firewall good for a home user ?

No, not really. Any of those software firewalls like Zonealarm, Black Ice, etc., and especially XP's built-in one, are all kind of pointless. The entire point of a firewall is to have something between the net and computer(s) you're trying to protect. Running the firewall software on the machine itself defeats the purpose. I would either get a hardware router/firewall or set up a dedicated machine running a decent OS as a firewall.

the XP firewall is stupid... you can't set applications you trust and let them serve on random ports. you have ot specifically open ports. zonealarm is much better 🙂

I have to agree with Heisenberg on this one. A decent router/firewall can be had for a reasonable price nowadays, and would allow for future expansions (mini LAN). If you are not ready to buy one, however, I reccomend ZoneAlarm, it give you full access over what comes in and what goes out.
